Been a busy and hectic weekend, but I can't let it pass without mentioning the release of the new Revolver box set. It includes a bunch of fun stuff like outtakes and alternate takes for nearly every track (including some in-depth development for a handful of songs).
But the real value here is the new stereo and mono mixes by Giles Martin (son of George, the master producer of the original and so much of the Beatles's catalog).
The new mixes are pristine and astonishing. Everyone who has any feelings at all about modern music should spend time with this. The following sentence is true for a handful of other albums (including a couple by the Beatles), but that makes it no less true of this particular record:
There is a strong, strong argument to be made that Revolver is still the greatest album produced since the invention of the LP.
