Band of The Day: Girl In a Coma
Nina Diaz has fronted Girl in a Coma since she was just 14 with her sister Phanie on drums and Jenn Alva on bass. Integrating cultural elements into their sound has always been part of GIAC, and sometimes they even sing in Spanish. Drawing influence from everything from punk rock to the Tejano music they grew up listening to, these girls definitely push out a unique sound. They have plenty of high energy punk rock, but are still mellow enough to be called an indie band. Their discography consists of six EP's and four full lengths, so if you have quite the catalog to explore. They're a great band, and amazing people, worthy of your time and money. Check em out.
Walking After Midnight
As The World Falls Down
I'll spin you Valentine evenings
Though we're strangers 'til now
We're choosing the path
Between the stars
I'll leave my love
Between the stars
Clumsy Girl
Bite our lips now
Deep in the crowd
You're the matter of my secret heart
Whisper codes under the hush sky
Smiles light up the night
GIAC is taking a break but Nina has released some great solo material with a fresh sound. Here's her new group on NPR.
