During the past decade, the damaging effects of excessive noise pollution from portable stereo earphones have gained attention. If you can hear the sound being delivered into a person's ear via headphones or earphones, it indicates the sound is too loud and over an extended
period can lead to permanent hearing loss.
Headphones that go over your ears can also damage your hearing if you use them too long or play music too loudly. They're just not as much of a risk as earbuds are: Having the source of the sound in your ear canal can increase a sound's volume by 6 to 9 decibels — enough to cause some serious problems.

Is it bad to listen to music in your headphones when you fall asleep?
Listening to music via headphones while sleeping might be safe. It really depends on the volume. If you are listening to music that is just above your quietest hearing threshold, that should not cause a problem. Without being totally exhausted, most people probably couldn't fall asleep if the music was too loud.
