Salvo en casos excepcionales, Silvio es un autor de la letray la música de sus canciones. Como en los ejemplos de Pablo Milanés, Chico Buarque, Viglietti, Serrat, Aute y no muchos más, esa doble autoría otorga a sus producciones una unidad esencial. Sean o no el resultado de un desarrollo paralelo, letra y música aparecen como gemelas (jimaguas, dirían en Cuba), copartícipes en el acto de parición. Fundamentalmente las letras de Silvio, sobre todo las que crea a partir de una duramente adquirida madurez, tienen un nivel textual tan afortunado que (algo no demasiado frecuente en los cantores populares) conservan su validez poética aun sin el básico soporte de la música. Alguna vez he sostenido, su trayectoria posterior corrobora mi diagnóstico marginal y profano, que Silvio es un poeta que canta, y más aún: que es uno de los poetas más talentosos de su generación.

Except in exceptional cases, Silvio is an author of the lyrics and music of his songs. As in the examples of Pablo Milanés, Chico Buarque, Viglietti, Serrat, Aute and not many others, this double authorship gives his productions an essential unity. Whether or not the result of a parallel development, lyrics and music appear as twins (jimaguas, they would say in Cuba), co-participants in the act of calving. Fundamentally the letters of Silvio, especially those that he creates from a hard-won maturity, have a textual level so lucky that (something not too frequent in the popular singers) they conserve their poetic validity even without the basic support of the music.
