Johnny Hartman (vocals), John Coltrane (tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). From the album John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (1963).
There are men who go from bar to bar looking for a girl to spend a fun night with. Others commit themselves to a woman, but they are not able to maintain their relationship, and they go searching again and again without ever finding the right one. I'm not like that, I met my girl as a child and we have not separated again. We complement each other completely and we know what each one wants. We go for a walk and the avenue is lit with her presence. We are so blended that we almost know what each of us is thinking. How lucky I am to have such a girlfriend!
Coltrane begins with a suggestive melody that repeats and changes suddenly, but returns to its previous course. Then it stops intermittently, as if giving emphasis to the message. Enter Hartman with his unmistakable charm. He says that just by thinking of his beloved, his heart sings like the awakening of spring. Only with his presence, the shadows disappear in the night between his arms. The contact with his hand is something he had not felt until then. Her blush when he speaks to her tells her that she is for him, and every kiss she gives him lights his soul. And Coltrane finishes off his words with a delicate end.
