Gem Reflection (http://music.gemreflection.com) is downtempo/chillout/psychedelic music project based in Czech Republic. Both members met at the local psytrance parties and decided to do some music together. It all began almost ten years ago. Brendy was already composing the music and regularly played on parties under the Gem Reflection brand, Benki joined as the bluesrock guitarist hungry for some new musical experiments.
Our first performances was quiet easy to play, Brendy just sent the planned track lists to Benki, he played a little bit with it as a backing tracks at home and then improvised on the stage. But after some time, it was a little bit boring and not so much inspiring way of collaboration.
We are both pretty busy persons and we live on the other side of the Czech Republic but still we wanted to try to make some tracks together. Sharing new ones in the in a very early stages of "prototype", trying to make some more space for the guitar and just looking for the way how to fit it all together better.
It is hard and tricky to discuss all the musical details online only, without the chance of playing a just "feel the music together" but it still works somehow. In the March of 2012 we released the first album with Benki's guitar Gem Reflection 05 (you can guess the names of the previous albums made by Brendy only! ;-) ). It contained some live recorded tracks, some brendy's solo tracks and also first few tracks composed in the stages - Brendy did some basics, Benki recorded some guitars, then everything edited, rearranged and sometimes recorded again... And two years later, we did a new one, Gem Reflection 06, which is full of separate studio work. The work on it was pretty frustrating sometimes but the result is not bad for the two persons who barely meet few times per year just on the stage for some livesets ;-)
But this way of working together is exhausting and as I said, not so much inspirating. During last four years, we made only 4 tracks and played few live performances. We don't even use the same software, so it is hard to share the projects with each other. But now we decided to finally get some free time, meet in the studio, do some rehearsal, just play and jam together to gather some new material and then we will see. I am looking forward to it, feels like some great new music will come after that. Hope you'll be able to hear it in the near future ;-)
And what are yours experience with making music with someone else online?
