AFRICA 2022 - SOME OF MY OLDER ORIGINAL MUSIC - ELECTRONIC/MATHY/WEIRDNESS

This is a song my friend

and I did probably 3 years ago, when we both first started messing around with electronic stuff. Unfortunately, I don't have screenshots of the Ableton file to accompany this, but I figured it would be good to go back and share some older stuff, since some of it is actually really cool.

Listen to AFRICA 2022 here.

This is a simple song,

basically 2 instruments, drums and the synth. I actually like the simplicity of it, adds to the general weirdness and the juxtaposition of a modern synth with very ancient/tribal sounding drums makes it all the weirder. The drums were some sample my friend had, I believe they were recorded by a guy traveling around Africa who released a sample set when he got home. We warped them a bit though, and the song wound up being in 12/8, although the drums feel a little off beat around beat 6 each time through.

The synth is following along

with the 12/8 form, although it gets a little weird with resolving after the 1st beat sometimes, or dragging the progression out an extra 2 or 3 beats a few times. While it sounds random, we actually did practice playing this part, and I wound up recording it a few times, it was difficult to make it seem random but not be. We tried to make it actually random, and it sounded like garbage. This sounds much more interesting to me, and I'm happy with how it came out in the end.

The end of the track

seems to end randomly, although the drums did repeat an even number of times. I like how the synth keeps going, like it's sort of confused about whether or not it's supposed to stop playing. All in all, I like this track a lot, especially considering how little we knew about electronic music at the time.
