The Damned - Smash It Up (Part 1 and 2)

The Damned are a long time

favorite of mine, along with every punk band ever basically haha. They have influenced SO many other groups, from hardcore bands in DC, to goth bands in England, even to 90s alt rock and indie stuff. They were willing to break rules, and avoid cliches, utilize interesting harmonies and chords, and experiment with production elements. During their heyday, they were known for wild live shows, with their singer dressed like a vampire (sort of?), their guitarist in a strange furry suit, and then two random punks playing drums and bass. A strange image, but they delivered with amazing music for sure.

Machine Gun Etiquette, which is probably their most important album. It's really an incredible piece as a whole, some slower tracks, some blazing fast punk songs, some really dark keyboard stuff... Just all around awesome. This is the closing track, and in my opinion, is the best song on the album. The guitar progression is awesome, and pretty complex. It isn't just an A, B and C section. The intro is detailed, and comes back in once more later in the song, and they also change keys at one point, which is awesome, as the lyrics of the chorus ("Smash It Up") continue, but in an entirely different (and minor) key. Just generally an awesome rock song, and a great closer to one of the most impressive albums ever.
