Elvis Costello - No Action (Early Version)

Elvis Costello is a legend

of the rock world, and has a long and varied career. He was born Declan MacManus, but began to go by his stage name of Elvis when he performed in the local pub scene. His early music is really interesting, he was clearly influenced by '50s rock and roll, and had a great style that was sort of a new, revitalized Buddy Holly. Over time, his sound has evolved, incorporating lots of genres and a wide array of instrumentation.

Listen to No Action (Early Version) by Elvis Costello here.

This song was originally

released on his 1978 album This Year's Model, which was the first album with his new backing band, The Attractions. However, this is an earlier version of the tune, which was put onto newer releases of his debut album, My Aim is True as a bonus song. I find this version really interesting, it's significantly faster the album version, and is very pop-punk. Considering it was written in '76 or '77, it makes it clear that Costello was very forward thinking, and was doing things years and decades ahead of other artists.

Enjoy today's song! Thanks for checking out my blog, and Steem On!

Sort Order:

Not a bad song! I would like it more if the guitar was louder and more raw. Almost seems like a mic'ed acoustic. Which is what he payed I guess, in many cases. I like acoustic in some 60s folk songs but when it comes to punk or proto punk, I wanna hear something loud and overdriven like how The Ramones do it! :D

Personally I like this one better. Its faster, more electric and more 50s influenced. :)

Such a short song, under 2 minutes. Cool guitar break though!

Thanks for giving me the Elvis Costello flashback, and rock on!

Also a great tune! Yeah this is a demo version I think, they didn't actually record it till 2 years later when the Attractions formed.
