This is what I do for a living

in music •  5 years ago  (edited)

It all started over a decade ago when my friend Agent Orange DJ from NYC trusted me to help him run his record labels "Gotham Grooves", "Paradisco" and his wife's DJ Becka's "Gotham City Records". After acquiring a huge deal of experience while loving the process, it was the time to make a move and start my own Different Is Different Records.

Few years passed and I met my dear @misselectric, who I helped to build and run her own MER; an underground techno record label that focuses on quality over quantity.

Three years ago, after launching and running Different Is Different Records (which this year turned nine) and MER, the time came when DJs and music producers approached me to do the same for them.

Gathering a huge amount of knowledge, experience and contacts during that time, plus building an infrastructure that allowed me to effectively run one of the genre's longest running record labels, it was the moment to offer a worry-free solution for those who desired having their own label, but lacked time, knowledge, contacts or infrastructure.

It was the time to give

Enter alma.audio, an all-in-one boutique service to launch and manage record labels for artists and anyone else with the wish of owning an imprint to release the music they love.

Our first partner was my dear friend Paula Cazenave who asked us to launch and manage Combine Audio, a techno record label that is home to huge artists of the worldwide scene.

She was kind enough to refer our services, and our second partner, Mooz, joined the family by asking us to launch and manage Hidden Suite Records, a label known for very high quality standards while keeping a steady output of releases.

Then Dutch producer from Amsterdam, Rustig, stepped in and requested us to launch and manage his Natural Behave imprint, a record label focusing on releasing the owner's music while inviting high profile remixers to its artist roster.

Soon we realized there was a need to attend artists who wanted only specific services, like, promotion or analogue mastering. Immediately partners like Clash with his Moodulab label or Egyptian producer Sherif Aidarous joined the family.

It's been a wild ride.

Cheers

Life is hard.... glad you have something to enjoy!

thank you @justyy, I'm lucky I could monetize my experience and contacts. Even if it translates in a sweet struggle :-)

I suck at promotion so badly, like I was stuck in my physical format (and still intend to go physical with the third CD because I join art with music and that's the way it is) but I wish I had more knowledge about how to promote on digital platforms... great you can live from this. I could for a decade but struggle now.

I should have instead titled it "This is how I survive"😂

Yes promo can be tricky, specially nowadays when magazine editors and writers are being bombarded by unsolicited emails with free music to download prior to its release date.

I know how expensive promoting a physical release can be in order to get reviews, press etc. But on the other hand you are bound to stand out and have even bigger chances of getting your music at least heard when you send a CD with beautiful artwork inside. I think it pays off.

However, due to the nature of how expensive it can get (shipping costs etc), maybe it is a good idea to couple it with a digital promo campaign. You should segment your promo recipients in at least two groups:

  1. those big magazines and blogs with a huge amount of reach, to whom you would send packages with CDs, ensuring that you stand out from the rest of music they get on a daily basis from other artists/labels who are competing for.their attention.
  2. The rest of journalists, radio stations etc. who aren't so big, you should add them to a digital promo list, where they would get your digital promotional copies emailed to them, with a software that will only let them download the music after they have left feedback or an opinion. You could use the best feedback quotes straight away for your publicity campaigns to promote the release once it is out for sale, or to hype it for pre-sale.

If you need help with point 2, please let me know :)

Obviously I am clueless nowadays, Flame single was a big effort but let us face I flopped promoting it aka I didn't of my first album I have hundreds of press reviews in so many languages, but yes it is expensive to ship and I am in a struggling economic condition. Been about to give up a few rines but just went on. Now working on three digital singles then will think how to crowdfund the album, I do not have money for music anymore it is almost changelling to do as much with my resources.

never give up!, real artist never give up, and you are a true artist.

oh bro, to tell you the truth, lately I have not the time and when I have time, I don't have the head to make music. I still do something from time to time, but I'm mostly focused on bringing the bread to the table sort of speak.

Cheers my man
