Conociendo a un maestro / Knowing a teacher

Hola querida comunidad, espero estén muy bien! Hoy les quiero comentar (cómo todos estos días) de otras de mis experiencias, una bonita invitación que tuve a un festival de Solistas en Venezuela.

Casi finalizando noviembre del 2018, me escribe un músico que sinceramente no conocía, hasta ese entonces. Él me habla de su festival, el cual se hace en una provincia de mi país, específicamente en el llano. Encantadísimo, pues los costos del transporte, hospedaje y comida iban de parte del festival (eso, por los problemas económicos del país, no se solía ver mucho) así que acepté.

Al llegar a Barinas, la provincia sede del festival, me encuentro con músicos con una calidad humana totalmente especial, era increíble el "feeling" que tuve con ellos desde el primer día. Sinceramente nunca me quise ir de allí. Era lo máximo.

Haciamos ejercicios de arco, de afinación, de memoria, todos. Cellos, viola, violines. Era una unión muy bonita.

Acercandose los días del concierto llega al Festival el solista invitado, un excelente maestro y una excelente persona. Un guitarrista de la provincia de Mérida, Daniel Marchán.

El mismo día de su llegada, mientras todos cenabamos el llega y se acerca al grupo, con su esposa y su guitarra, a hablar un poco. Conversación que abarcó su vida, las nuestras, y hasta un pequeño recital privado de él para nosotros, y por si fuera poco, un pequeño concierto improvisado de piezas latinoamericanas y venezolanos entre todos, una belleza!!

Ya cuando el maestro se iba nos preguntó si queríamos tocar algo con él en el recital, que él iba a estar encantado de hacerlo... No bastó ni un minuto para yo pararme de la silla, acercarme y preguntarle "maestro, le gustaría tocar el cantabile de Paganini?" teniendo como respuesta un rotundo "claro!"

Así que lo decidimos. Pasaron los días y la verdad es que nuestro horario no coincidió tan fácil, hasta un día antes del recital donde pudimos ensayar la obra por primera vez. En una sola pasada de arriba a abajo nos quedó en claro que la obra se tenía que tocar porque sí, ya que bastante era esa "magia" que sentíamos al interpretarla juntos.

En ese ensayo, que fue en su habitación, tuvimos el primer público, era su hijo mayor que estaba escuchandonos por videollamada desde fuera del país. Un momento muy emotivo porque como me lo comentó su esposa, el maestro había tenidomucho tiempo sin interpretar la guitarra por una enfermedad, donde creyeron que no iba a volver a hacerlo. Eso y el hecho de que el hijo pudiera verlo tocar, estando tan lejos, hizo llorar a su esposa, dándome a mí un motivo más para hacer ese recital con el maestro. Al final del ensayo, el maestro me comentó algo que hoy por hoy me marcó un montón... Me dijo que el reconocía a los grandes violinistas, pues su hermano también lo era, y que de hecho, al escuchar mi sonido le recordaba mucho al violinista francés Maurice Hasson, un excelente maestro del violin. Eso, hoy por hoy, es uno de los comentarios más impactantes.

El festival fue una bellísima experiencia, pues como lo dije, estuvo lleno de personas con un amor muy grande a la música, unas personas excelentes! Y así cómo empezó, así terminó, de las más especiales experiencias.

Quiero ser sincero con quienes me escuchan, porque creo que es necesario hablar de esto. Para ese entonces (2018) no tenía muy en claro cómo interpretar el cantabile de Paganini cómo lo tengo ahora, hubo muchos detalles cómo el vibrato (movimientos de la mano o dedos izquierdos) y glissandos (movimiento ascendente o descendente del dedo puesto en la cuerda mientras se toca) que en Paganini no las debe haber, pero aún así espero que lo disfruten queridos lectores! Hello dear community, I hope you are very well! Today I want to tell you (how all these days) of other of my experiences, a nice invitation that I had to a Soloist festival in Venezuela.

Almost ending November 2018, a musician who sincerely did not know me writes, until then. He tells me about his festival, which is done in a province of my country, specifically in the plain. Very charming, because the costs of transportation, lodging and food were on the part of the festival (that, because of the economic problems of the country, it was not used to be seen much) so I accepted.

When I arrived in Barinas, the province where the festival was based, I met musicians with a totally special human quality, the "feeling" I had with them from day one was incredible. I honestly never wanted to leave there. It was the maximum.

We did bow exercises, tuning, memory, all. Cellos, viola, violins. It was a very beautiful union.

As the days of the concert approach the guest soloist, an excellent teacher and an excellent person arrive at the Festival. A guitarist from the province of Mérida, Daniel Marchán.

On the same day of his arrival, while we all had dinner he arrives and approaches the group, with his wife and his guitar, to talk a little. Conversation that covered his life, ours, and even a small private recital of him for us, and if that were not enough, a small impromptu concert of Latin American and Venezuelan pieces among all, a beauty!

Already when the teacher left he asked us if we wanted to play something with him in the recital, that he was going to be delighted to do it ... It wasn't enough for me to stand up from the chair, approach me and ask him "teacher, he would like to play Paganini's cantabile? " having a resounding answer "of course!"

So we decided. The days passed and the truth is that our schedule did not coincide so easily, until one day before the recital where we could rehearse the work for the first time. In a single pass from top to bottom it became clear that the work had to be played because, as it was quite that "magic" we felt when interpreting it together.

In that essay, which was in his room, we had the first audience, he was his oldest son who was listening to us by video call from outside the country. A very emotional moment because as his wife told me, the teacher had had a long time without playing the guitar for a disease, where they thought he would not do it again. That and the fact that the son could see him play, being so far away, made his wife cry, giving me one more reason to do that recital with the teacher. At the end of the rehearsal, the teacher told me something that today marked me a lot ... He told me that he recognized the great violinists, because his brother was also, and that in fact, hearing my sound reminded him a lot to French violinist Maurice Hasson, an excellent violin master. That, today, is one of the most shocking comments.

The festival was a beautiful experience, because as I said, it was full of people with a great love for music, excellent people! And that's how it started, that's how it ended, of the most special experiences.

I want to be honest with those who listen to me, because I think it is necessary to talk about this. At that time (2018) I was not very clear on how to interpret Paganini's cantabile how I have it now, there were many details such as vibrato (movements of the hand or left fingers) and glissandos (upward or downward movement of the finger placed on the rope while playing) that in Paganini there should not be, but still I hope you enjoy it dear readers!
