Producing Tamil Devotional songs & music: Work and Upcoming Album Release.

Meet Bhaskar Swaminathan

He is a singer and a songwriter and mainly writes and composes in Tamil language. Most of his songs are oriented towards devotional themes.
By profession, he works in the IT industry but music is his passion.

I met him through my academy @muziclub where his daughter used to learn music.

Over the course of a year or so, I have produced more than 10 songs for him - most of them being devotional.

What I love about working with him is that he is open - to musical ideas and collaborations - which I believe is the most important trait of a good successful musician in the industry.

Bhaskar's method of working goes something like this:

  • he writes and composes a song
  • gives a vocal take to a producer and
  • lets the producer decide the direction of the song.

If it is something he likes, he will make a small video with the lyrics and translations and upload on his YouTube channel - which is mainly watched by his friends and family.

He doesn't have big budgets and hence works with whoever can provide the best results for the amount of money he can spare for his passion.

@muziclub principal Shruti Jakati introduced me to Bhaskar and this is the first song he gave me to produce:

Now I am an amateur producer, and am still learning. This was a great way for me to learn as well as earn some income on the side.
Bhaskar really liked what I did with the song.

My influences were modern/western and my main reference was A.R.Rahman (for two main reasons - I just LOVE his work and he has worked extensively in the Tamil film and music industry).

In addition, I am married to a Tamilian 😁, and from what I understood from my father in law (who is an avid Tamil music listener) that Bhakar's lyrics has some real depth and meaning.

From then on, I went on to produce many of his other songs. Below are 3 of my favourite songs I have produced for him.

1. Taane Tandaane:

This one is not exactly devotional per say, but more philosophical in lyrics. It can be a good traditional dance number I think:

2. En Ambe:

This is a romantic song. Bhaskar came to me on the 14th of Feb 2017 at 11 am and said that he had given this song to another producer but he didn't quite like the direction. But he wanted to release the song before the day ends!
I produced this song in 5 hours straight! And though I would love to work on this more, I am quite happy how it turned out! 😎

3. Kavalaigal theerpan Iyappan:

This is a devotional song for the deity Iyappa Swami. This was the first time I used Carnatic instruments in the production - Ghatam, Mridangam and the likes.

Bhaskar and I had a long discussion has month about how his lyrics and composition will work for the Tamil devotional and even the film industry and how with the right budget and production we can create a better product.
So he has have decided to cut out his very first professional album with me being the chief consultant on the project.
We will be using the songs I have produced in the past and giving them a revamp with better recording, production and mix and will be releasing an album early next year.

The recording process has begun. Here are a few pics of the recording session last week with a professional Carnatic session instrumentalist. We recorded the Mridangam, the Ghatam and the Morsing. These essentially cover the low, mids and highs of the percussion frequency spectrum.

Mridangam:

Ghatam:

Morsing:

I am currently also producing a really fun dance number that Bhaskar has written which should be out very soon.

I would love to receive some feedback from the musicians and producers out here on Steemit for improvement. 🙏🏼 ✨
