VLOG 25: Major Labels Are Earning Bigger Profits -- Should Independent Musicians Worry?

in music •  7 years ago

a rising tide lifts all ships. It seems that the music industry is starting to find its way in the digital era.

there are now a lot of options for independent artists. Patreon, Steemit, even just distribution through Tunecore/Routenote/many others.

Sponsorships are now accessible to anybody with an audience. Streamers, email lists, podcasts, anybody with an audience in the 10k+ range can generate good income from running a few ads on their content.

Lastly - selling your album directly to consumer is great with Bandcamp!

What's your opinion on the major labels earning more money last quarter?

p.s. here's the anthony fantano video that inspired this vlog - http://bit.ly/2u3yLZn

I've recently started trying to make music. Thanks for sharing these platforms, might be of great use some time in the future.

Totally. I think Patreon is a big opportunity for some people.

I personally think this is good and separates the hard working artists who want to make a difference from the money chasing bloated whales who are now forced to go back on the road and make money like they used to. No more can they rest on their royalties . Another point is hopefully there is a societal paradigm shift where people stop judging music based on chart position , I mean who gives a crap about that now, and actually just listen to the music and decide for themselves about whether it is good or not.

I dunno I hope I can rest on some royalties one day hah

Steemit royalties my friend hehehe

Interesting that will all the bellyaching about piracy and the death of the music industry, the big labels are still making more money than before.

Just like the VCR was going to kill movies and piano rolls were going to destroy sheet music...

It would be hilarious to watch major industries attack each change of technology if they didn't end up profiting so much from it in the end.

Well to be fair I think label profits are still way down from the peaks back in the 90s

I seen the vlog too, to me it doesn't say alot because I think alot of the majors have been so slow that they only just finaly waved the white flag and accepted that streeming is the future. Because they are just moving into the space they have alot of room to grow so it is easy to make a percentage gain on last quaters earnings. It will be more telling if they are still making gains five years from now when the streaming market gets more compettitive.
