Prophet On Eurorack

in music •  7 years ago  (edited)

Playing keys on top of some modular beats. I patched up a pretty simple beat on my eurorack modular synthesizer and jamed on top with the DSI Prophet rev 2. The patch on the Prophet uses FM synthesis, or Frequency Modulation. The idea is that you modulate the pitch of an audio source or oscillator at audio rate. The amount that one oscillator modulates the pitch of the other is known as depth, by controlling the amount of depth and the difference in pitch of the two oscillators (or more) many timbres can be created.

The Prophet Rev 2 does not directly support FM, however as it is a very useful synthesis technique I figured out how to do it on the Prophet. While it is impossible to route one of the two oscillators to control the frequency of the other (unless i'm missing something if so please comment below), it is possible to modulate the filter with oscillator #1. When the filter resonance is set high it begins to self oscillate and act as a oscillator in its own right. Turning key tracking to 64 allows the filter to track with the keyboard and stay in tune. Setting the cutoff to multiples of 12; 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 etc will have it tuned so that C on the keyboard produces a C on the filter. in this patch I am using envelope 3 to control the fm depth and velocity to control the amount this envelope is applied.
