Ten artists to look out for if you truly love Frank Ocean

And I quote, Ocean has always been “an incredibly private individual”. This elusive and reserved musical character was the focus of a big Twitter trend last two year, when it was announced that his highly-anticipated sophomore record might be coming in the Summer of 2016.

After a series of mysterious posts, videos, screenshots of library cards, fanzines (titled ‘Boys Don’t Cry’), a live broadcast to a virtually empty room with just a staircase, vague reports of the second new album (which turned out to be ‘Endless’, a series of ambient instrumentals designed to accompany the actual album), and many other publicity stunts, ‘Blonde’ was finally released. It was one of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year, following a gargantuan amount of high quality press coverage. I can’t even begin to imagine the pressure his PR team had.

All this was enough to capture the attention of a huge group of people even Nigerians, who perhaps weren’t familiar with the earlier work of Mr. Ocean. I have created an informative piece about him, educating readers on his nonconformist approach to art. It includes a nice layout of his discography. Each has an in-depth review and a summation as to why each record has it’s own importance to me.

"Frank Ocean has had a huge influence on me as a person who appreciates music and what it adds to our daily lives. Adding elements of art, fashion, and performance set him apart from other artists. He adds another dimension to the game which will take him far and leave a lasting impression on our generation.”

Frank Ocean cloning 21 Savage's popular slang;this can be heard on Chanel

Frank Ocean continues to be one of the most versatile artists in the rap genre. His songs go beyond rap and dip into R&B, soul, and even electronic pop. With two official albums under his belt and various features and singles, it's easy to see why fans are so into him. But how long can you listen to "Nikes"? Okay, yes, a while. We get it... But eventually, you'll have to listen to something else. Here are a few artists that you'll love just as much (just to hold you over until Frank drops another one, of course).

Khalid

Khalid combines his soulful voice with songs that can sometimes overlap into the rap genre. Some of his songs feature more upbeat tunes and hip-hop beats while others give us a great sense of the range of his voice.

Jonny P

A little more soulful than Frank Ocean, but lot of Jonny P's songs have that same slow mellow tone to them like Ocean's "Ivy" or "Self Control." Songs you should listen to: "Shine On" and "Say I Do."

Noname

Noname is perfect. Every song of hers has a million little pieces that belong in it. From her lyrics which are all lines of amazing poetry, to the piano notes and xylophone tones in the background, to all of the collaborations and harmonies with each track. Her album Telefone is definitely one to check out, along with some of her earlier songs.

Jamila Woods

A lot like Noname in many ways, from her meaningful lyrics to the soft and mellow guitar hooks. Jamila was featured in the song "Sunday Candy" by Donnie Trumpet and the Social experiment, but she recently created a mixtape of her own titled HEAVN.

Kyle

If you like Frank Ocean's rap side more, than KYLE is for you. Some of his songs are a little old school while others tend to have that a more upbeat electronic-y pop to them.

Nicotine's Famous Honey

This artist's songs not only have that chill rap aspect about them, but some of them even feel a bit like doo-wop songs like the new track "Pull Up." The vocals of Nicotine's Famous Honey are a bit like the high pitched light voice of Jamila Woods.

John Givez

A great combination of more heavy rap, layered with background singers and a bit of R&B. Songs like "Johnny's Cookout" and "Take me Back" are must-listens.

Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu gives us a taste of a more bluesy vibe, and combined with her mellow voice -- it's magic.

The O'My's

Much like Frank Ocean, their songs can be very different from one another.

Anderson .Paak

You might already be familiar with Anderson .Paak but if you're not... What the hell are you doing?

Hello, your post was nominated for an upvote by a fellow within the Sndbox incubator. Thanks for sharing @jvff! Steem on :)

I know this is an old post, but I'm new to Steemit and was searching for Frank Ocean stuff (as I'm an enthusiast). A couple of other artists to add to the list would be Choker (some critique him that he bites Frank's sound entirely, however, I enjoy his work) and Jay Wile (who released a song that another person reposted disguised as a leak from Frank). BTW, just followed you as you too are a huge Frank stan.
