As so many other I have rediscovered the hurdy-gurdy because of the TV-series Black Sails. Not that i have seen a second of the actual series, but because a very enthusiastic friend of mine brought it to my attention... the title song that is. (which include some pretty cool 3d-animation too.)

Bear McCreary - theme from Black Sails

But after that I have been delving more into the instrument. Like a bagpipe it produces some drone-tones, (it is the strange sound underneath) that are constant. That makes the music played on the hurdy-gurdy what you call modal-music, which is basically all other other kinds of music apart from the European music from classical times and ahead (which is based on shifting harmonics).

I found this Austrian virtuous called Matthias Loibner which really gets to use all of the many possibilities of the instrument.

Matthias Loibner - Razvrastanata

But also this French musician that has put some electrical pickups on his custommade instruments. Also a very interesting sound.

Guilhem Desq - Omen

If you like it Youtube has plenty of other recordings of both musicicans!

It's funny how this planet is just a small village sometimes. I happen to be friends with the former wife of Matthias Loibner, who actually is an austrian guy (not german). Did you see him playing in Denmark this January?

No, I did not see the concert as I just discovered him. But I better change German to Austrian then...

ah black sails.. have to be mindful with that, them cutthroats everywhere lol. that got to be the coolest instrument ever, didn't know what it was .off to youtube to look up more.
