A Song Can Ignite A Thousand Words
They say a picture can say a thousand words. In a writer it's more true to say, a picture can fire off a thousand words. You may see a sadness in an eye but see a strength within the clench of a jawline, and questions fire across your mind to what the persons story is.
More often than not, I see an image and it makes me think of one of my characters, the expression upon the face may have been the way my character might have looked in a certain situation. I usually go back and re read that part and more often than most, I add to the section and it is improved because of reediting.
Over the years certain songs have stirred the same reflection. As I listen to the words, the emotion within the music; makes my mind begins to drift and I find I am picturing one of my character. The passion in the song is coming from their lips and the words are telling their tale in parts.
In my first book Letalis Vindicta a number of songs I heard captured the love story between Darla and Samuel.
Darla was rather head strong and rebellious and at first she fought against Samuel refusing to accept she had feelings for him. Two songs come to mind to describe their love story.
Christine Perri Arms is the first.
How I interrupted the song and related it to my characters was Darla ran from her husband to be(Samuel), fearing he would dominate her and she would lose her freedom. She built walls to protect herself emotionally. However Samuel just accepted her immaturity and waited patiently for her to realise that they were in love.
As the story unfolds she realises that Samuel is actual the safety and love she has been seeking. As the song says '... you puts your arms around me and I am home...'
When I listen to the song it reignites their love story in my head and makes me think of Darla long journey of self discovery and the fact Samuel never gave up on them, even though Darla tested his patient a lot.
The second song is Avicii Addicted to you.
Basically Darla world was crazy and Samuel was the calm sensible influence that was always there to protect and keep her safe. ('you came in to my crazy world like a cool and cleansing wave')
It's a vampire so the reference to 'flowing through my veins' will of cause fire the image of them in love. Samuel's blood was like a drug to her powerful and divine.
So this song when I listen to it always makes me think of the beginning of the book when he is courting her and how he used his powerful blood to entice and lure her in.
Hope you enjoyed hearing the reason why I enjoy these two songs.
