Who is Rich Brian?

in music •  7 years ago  (edited)

Formerly known as Rich Chigga, Brian Imanuel is an 18 year-old teenager from Indonesia who is going places with his dope beats, hard lyrics, and music videos with clever use of juxtapositions. You certainly don't see a scrawny Asian dude sporting fanny packs and pyjamas everyday, swearing and rapping like he's Ghostface Killah.

Also, his team does it without any need for make-ups and photoshops to cover his acne in the music videos. Breaking conventions in every sense is clearly a good way to stand out. Anyway, I think the art goes deeper than that. To better understand this phenomenon, check out one of my ancient Steemit posts on The Rise of Vaporwave & New Age Aesthetics. Well, at least that's what I think from a curator's point-of-view.

It's amazing that he learned most of what he's using today just by consuming loads of Youtube videos, from speaking the English language to grokking American humour. Some might get turned off by the explicit lyrics, but that's just the rap game, yo. Also, I love his deep and deadpan vocals. It's working wonders for the cloud-rap genre.

Below are some of my favourite music / concept videos with Rich Brian in them. The last two videos - a documentary and a hot-wings interview are pretty interesting too.

The last that I really dug into rap beats was one of Drake's mixtapes back in ~2010. Rich Brian's tight tracks certainly makes me wanna dance on the streets again with loud music banging.. but I think I might be too old for that now lol. How about you?

Dear @kevinwong

I wanted to inform you of an opportunity that #promo-steem has for @sndbox and other major projects on the steem blockchain.

We are the media partners for the London Crypto Currency Show on 14th April. In return for this, we have managed to get our hands on 14,000 usd of promotional access in the form of 2 x hour long presentation seminars and one 4 x 3m exhibition stand.

Instead of using the presentation time and exhibition stand to ourselves we decided to let the major projects and notable steemians use it. So we are giving away talking spots and the opportunity exhibit at our stand for free.

This is quite a big deal since the London Crytpo Currency Show is organised by the London Investors Show, a well-established, long term investing exhibition which brings in crowds of 2,500 experienced investors through its doors at most events. This is therefore an excellent opportunity for the steem blockchain to make a strong mark at one of the premier blockchain events in the UK, and Europe basically for free.

Please see this blog for further details. I hope you are interested in either sending someone from your project to talk at one of the seminars, supporting the event or spreading the word to other major projects or notable steemians. https://steemit.com/promo-steem/@starkerz/exhibition-opportunity-call-to-steem-projects-at-london-crypto-currency-show

I look forward to hearing from you!
@starkerz

he is one talented guy and rap lovers are with creative and fress lyrics makers

Damn this kid is freaking talented. How come he hasn't gone viral? His songs are dope and they literally got me off my seat and on my feet dancing.

To think that he learnt all he does for. YouTube video makes him a genius to me. Not everyone learns that way. This is cool and I would get to downloadbthe audio versions of these songs later today for my listening and dancing pleasure.

The high point for me is knowing he learned all these from mere watching YOUTUBE videos endlessly. wow! What a boy what a talented! Thanks for this @kevinwong

He has an audience and that is Asia and the western audiences follows, great for the younger generation.

Nice! Always kool to see a genuine person walking the walk within their own dream making it more real with every step. Chin up, feet forward and focusing on the dream becoming a reality. Thanks as always for enlightening me friend. Enjoyed.

“I’m 18 now and women can legally have sex with me.”

Really! lol Intersting guy. I can tell his deep voice doesn’t quite match the teenager it originate from. He is quiet outspoken as a He’s a rapper, but get this, at the same time he’s an Asian nerd. Yes, you are completely right “You certainly don't see a scrawny Asian dude....”
Obviously he is a YouTube ⭐️

Haha i thought that line was a bit too far out and forced, but okay xD

Oh yes, excellent tracks and rap music was also in my youth. This is the music of the streets and many, I think, were addicted and are now addicted to this genre. Thank you @kevinwong, I definitely visited my youth!

He's super viral among teenagers these days. First heard about him and 88rising from this article: https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1537-inside-88rising-the-company-behind-rich-chigga-and-his-asian-rap-comrades/

Yeap, caught the right bug :)

Close your eyes and listen to these vocals. There's absolutely no way that you are gonna imagine an 18yo bloke from Indonesia

Haha, let alone anywhere else, actually.

Hehe yeah! That too

What an amazing son of Indonesia, proud to be Indonesia!

Good luck always children of Indonesia!

he loves gucci damn he is ruling like a gangster boye

Great, this are one of the people that motivate others to know that age is not a barrier to achieving greatness. Most people use age as an excuse, it's either I am too young or too old, but the young lad is taking his career to zenith heights. Thanks for sharing, it is really motivational.

Spunky kid, thanks, for intro! Danced a bit, not in the streets, but in the safety of my own apartment :)

Will be playing him, again...
@kevinwong

haha too old to dance, i don't think. I am sure you still got some moves. The kid is really dope, I checked out of the lyrics and he is so game. I am shaking to the hit already

I found out about Rich Brian after Filthy Frank aka George Miller left YouTube to pursue a musical career. Nice to see someone else on Steemit enjoy his musical talents as much as I do. This dude needs to get more recognition for the amazing music he creates.

absolutely. I've been kinda out of date with music though. but i've been looking away from mainstream circuits.

Well you know what they say...

A man is getting old when he walks around a puddle instead of through it.

So perhaps this is an indication of whether or not you're too old for these beats? As for me, I think I'll always be a kid on the inside. I can't imagine myself ever fully 'growing up'.

lol i like playing with puddles xD

woow...Brian Imanuel has an amazing talent. I've never heard the name before. You have given ne a homework now. I will research more about him. Blessings to you @kevinwong for sharing this.

Thank you so very much for introducing the world to this wonderful rapper Rich Brian, to be very honest i did not know about him before your blog @kevinwong ;)

One of small nephew is so fond of hip hop genre and i am definitely going to share your blog with him :)

At first I thought, ok what a ****
but I have changed my mind after watched the vdos. Well they are quite good actually

Yey yey yey... those are some hot rythmes. I had seen Brian Imanuel once on one of those music shows on TV. It must have been MTV music base.. I noticed something special from this boy. It turns out he actually spits out some badass lyrics in all he's jams.. Something that is different from the ordinary rap songs we here daily. I've honestly gotten moved by the quality he's got. At 18, he's one for the future.

This lad is extremely talented. The music the beats the voice. Qualities of a super rockstar.

Original is what I need. This kid went from viral joke, to creating a LANE for himself. His duo-toning on this is FRESH, *tingles

Young talent.. He is really good, i love the lyrics of glow like that.

Hello Kevin, God bless you for sharing these videos. I mean! what an amazing voice! I almost gave way to tears. He is gifted and he should never give up no matter what people say. I hope to meet him someday and you too @kevinwong

Well, his deep voice really sounds great when he's raping! It's crazy what some people achieve by spending a lot of time on the internet.
We all process so much information throughout the day. But it's all about how you use the information that you get...
Even Youtube videos (Vlogs and so on) and memes can be a source of learning, like this dude explains. Woah...

I would love to see you show off your moves :))) maybe even organize a steemit dance off. If somebody has some beef or drama with another steemian, they could come over to the dance off and settle it once and for all :P

Guy is talented, alright, never heard of him.

I sense a certain artsy vibe on his works. That is pretty sick. Just a few singers I remember are careful enough to combine art and beat in a cool yet kinda "elite" way.

Follow already. This guy has a lot to offer!

Interesting guy! I certainly like the second track! Dance, acid, piano, hiphop-ish; nice combo.

Yes! We have the similar tastes then lol. My fav too out of all

Great young guy, who is doing what he want! Wish him a lot of success!:-)

Wow! this guy seems to be a genius and very talented. I was thinking that i am not going to watch all the videos but after one and one i saw all of these and these are simply awesome.

I wish him success, great guy. Thanks for share.

Good jop friends @kevinwong

It's good to have another kid taking that stage of fame again. It's being a long time since that has happened. Thanks @kevinwong for fishing him out among the crowd. Hope he gets to that level

Although I do not know anything about Rich Brian before. But after listening to these songs I really like it. . He was very talented and her rap was awesome. . This young talent boy has really impressed me. Thank you so much @kevinwong

Amazing!

Wow, he looks like the real deal. Keep on fanning gee.

Very talented I love his voice and music Thanks for sharing

That's really amazing, he's got the skills.
And to have learnt all that from watching YouTube videos is even more amazing..
That is raw talent

his voice sounds like he was 40+ years oldprezes.jpg

I am very happy to hear it, what more Indonesian children, good health and success we always pray for!
Thanks @kevinwong

He's definitely making his people proud, I saw his interview on hot ones. He's a pretty chill dude 🤙

Isn't it Filthy Frank? I saw a couple of his videos. Still can't forget his Mew...
So they actually work together with Brian Imanuel, that's interesting.

I just spent way too long going down the rabbit hole of these videos and then moving beyond on youtube...great beats and kind of magnetic, thanks @kevingwong for the intro to Rich Brian.

I think it's nice so funny, good job brother @kevinwong regards from Indonesia

Well listened to some of them !He sure sounds great by the way !No wonder he is getting popular !

Super dub content. It was interesting to watch your videos. Well-done sir.

wow...you shear some amazing music video.....i impressed to see it....

I first knew about him from the track 'dat stick', then I got 'chaos' from a friend. I like the way his raps are just cool. I still think dat stick was my best from him. Only issues I got with his music is that they are so short. Barely pass the 2.30mins mark.

Nooice. I heard of Rich Chigga. Didn't know he changed alias.

This guy is really great, saw just a video and am already grooving to this guy's music. Good work

Amazing achievements I am proud to be an Indonesian. Thank you for sharing about Rich Brian.

Rich Brian is a smart kid. He has a remarkable talent. His first song, Dat Stick was fantastic. Then, his third song titled Seventeen quickly touched 1 million viewers on Youtube and SoundCloud. I think that's a great achievement and Indonesia should be proud of having such a great musician.

I've been following Rich Brian for awhile. Pull up with Ah Stick is definitely always going to be my favorite from him. His new album was decent for a debut and I'm really excited to see where he goes from there.

He is not only an awesome rapper but also a record producer and also a songwriter. Most of his amazing work lies in some of his great songs like dat stick, cold and glow like that. Great video songs. Thanks

Brian Imanuel's songs certainly have a distinct melodic appeal and I'm not even a big fan of hip hop or rap. The boy might just go places with a big of luck.

maybe if in my opinion, a hobby that, does not depend on age

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Is that actually him doing ice skating ballet? Or a body double?

Yeah. I love the guy's originality. The fact that he's not mingling with the crowd to get lost or get undiscovered is wise and commendable. Great dude, great music.
Good job @kevinwong for digging out such a talent.

i didnt know about that guy.. but yeah he n his youtube is just him.. i saw Skrillex :D

G-OO-D - J-O-B

Rap not much, rather we stay with the reggee, Bob Marley style, who is our maximum exponent with his sonorous melodies evoking the waves and the heat of the warm tropics, as well as feeling the sea breeze and the waves rolling on your face,
and making reference to surfing, surfing the waves to the glory of being between life and death.
but the music we all should enjoy is the part that connects us with the infinite and where we find ourselves with the genre that most identifies us, and often we sometimes stay with genres that do not correspond to our time because we have listened to our parents and You've already screwed up, leaving you with old man's tastes.
Good day.

Greetings, Kevin.

This kid is very talented. It's new, but it has an adult hehehe voice.
