Tones and The Dance Monkey

The last few months have been a meteoric rise for the Mornington Peninsula raised songstress Toni Watson aka 'Tones and I'.

Her hit single ‘Dance Monkey’ after being released on Triple J Unearthed has catapulted its way to number 1 in 18 countries, is the biggest hit song currently around the world and has broken numerous records on the Australian Aria Charts.

When I first heard the song, It sounded like a catchy melody with a unique style but it wasn’t until watching Tones’ live performance on the Jimmy Fallon show a few weeks ago that I realized Tones was none other than Toni Watson, a friend I met several years prior at the Xfactor auditions and recorded a duet with.

Toni started busking a couple of years ago in Melbourne and moved to Byron Bay to busk full time as there were fewer restrictions for buskers there. She received such an overwhelming response from crowds on her first day that she decided to relocate permanently.

The clip below is a duet we recorded back in 2013. We uploaded it onto her first youTube account which I helped her create. I’d admittedly taken down the video as I wasn’t happy with my vocals but recently had it disclosed again in light of her exposure.

Needless to say, Tones was brimming with talent and style even from a young age and her hard work and dedication have paved the way to one of the biggest singles to come out of Australia in decades.

Mad props to this Ozzy Icon and we’ll definitely be hearing more chart-toppers from her in the upcoming future.
