in music •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi Steemit!

Today, I'll write about Transcribe!, an useful software for all kind of musician, from the beginner up to the professional musician.

We all, at some point in our careers, need to transcribe some music. Either by playing a song that we like, or imitating an artists style or even to do a freelance gig.

Transcribing music gives us pretty nice things. It expands our music vocabulary, it help us to understand the form of an specific song, to develop our ear and to practice a particular style, lick, riff or anything that is within an audio recording.

So... let's get into...

Transcribe!

From its original website, Seventh String Ltd.

The Transcribe! application is an assistant for people who want to work out a piece of music from a recording, in order to write it out, or play it themselves, or both. It doesn't do the transcribing for you, but it is essentially a specialised player program which is optimised for the purpose of transcription. It has many transcription-specific features not found on conventional music players.

Transcribe! has a lot of features that makes music transcription easier than ever. Tools that help us to understand what's happening on that little fraction of the song that we are transcribing.

It can be used for lyrics transcription too or even for speech transcriptions in any language. It has specialized panels for text transcription, and a keyboard for music transcription.

Features

Among Transcribe! features, we have

  • EQ: a powerful equalizer and filter
  • Tuner: adjust the song key, by tuning it higher or lower in cents than the original.
  • Transposing: Useful for the transposing instruments, like the trumpet or the sax.
  • Speed: very useful feature. Speeds up or slows a song. It alouds to change its tempo, for better listening.

My experience

As soon as I've found out Transcribe! software I've wanted to try it out. It works with MP3's audio files, which is the international standard for compress audio files, making it practical, and easier to work with when transcribing music.

It is a private software thought. It is not free, and it has a commercial license. It also has a 14 days long trial period so you can test it and later, buy a license.

With Transcribe! I was able to transcribe the Bob Berg's solo on his tune Friday Night at the Cadillac Club from his album Short Stories, one of my favorites. It also helped me to practice later on that solo with my sax, from a slower speed up to the real tempo.

You can get the trial version in their website: https://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/download.html

I hope you'll find it useful
