This song expresses an optimism that transcends any sadness over a failed relationship.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “Into My Arms”

“Into My Arms” (1997)

The song “Into My Arms”  is the first song on, and the first single from, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ critically acclaimed album “The Boatman’s Call.”

Although the song was reportedly inspired by Cave’s break-up with his first wife, it expresses an optimism that transcends any relationship or even any sadness over a failed relationship.

Hope over Despair

Like most of the songs on that album and its follow-up, “Into My Arms”  is characterized by its quiet and somber air and its tender and melancholic lyrics. A piano and a bass are the sole instruments played on it.

The stark black ‘n’ white video, with its scenes of people despairing and grieving, is haunting and impressive. Although Cave approved of the video in and of itself, he did not approve of its bleak and depressing spirit, believing that it did not express the “melancholy optimism”  of the song.

1 Great Song

Australian music writer Toby Creswell included this song in his 2005 book “1001 Songs: The Great Songs of All Time and the Artists, Stories and Secrets Behind Them.”  Moreover, Cave himself has said that “Into My Arms”  is one of the songs that he remains most proud of having written.   (Image source)

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Nick Cave is an Australian singer / songwriter and author. For over 30 years, he has been the frontman for The Bad Seeds. Prior to that, he led several other bands, most notably the post-punk band The Birthday Party. Over 2006–2013, he fronted a side-project, a garage band of sorts named Grinderman.

Words and Acts

Apart from his music, Cave has published 2 novels and several books of poetry. He has also worked in film – acting, writing screenplays, and composing soundtracks.   (Image source)

I don't believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
   [3 x]
Into my arms

And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that's true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
   [3 x]
Into my arms

But I believe in love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So, keep your candles burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she’ll keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
   [3 x]
Into my arms

I remember seeing this video for the first time and feeling so sad! I know it has hope, but the black and white and light really take it down a notch.

I'm coming by to thank you for your recent comment upvotes, @majes.tytyty, and to beg for more. I was in Bangkok a week ago and though that was a good trip, I really fell apart this last week on posting. I see you are at a high power and hope you can send a few votes to my older comments. This steem price is killing me! Holy cow.

As to the trip, I was in a great peaceful neighborhood way south of the airport but right at the bts station. So the trip was not that hard and I got a lot of wonderful cheap street food. I love it here in Malaysia but Thailand sure has my heart. I really wish I could figure out how to stay there full time.

Thank you as always for all of your amazing support. Can't wait for the fork - ergh...

Sure, I'll give you a bunch of upvotes now. Last time, it took a few days for my SteemPower to recover, but I've got time .... :-)

A few years back, I spent about 5 nights in a "village" about 10 kilometres south of Suwarnabhumi airport. I was in a quiet guesthouse with a pool. The main roads got quite busy with traffic, but I just avoided that.

I spent time lounging in the guesthouse, or walking thru the wonderful riverside market. I had a great massage on a platform over the river, while the waves lapped the support posts. Blissful.

And as I walked back to the riverside path, I saw an alligator relaxing in the water, in the shade. He was bothering nobody.

Cheers!

Wow! That must have been a great trip.

Way back when in South Florida I had a job where my morning walk-through included looking in canals to find alligators so we could get animal control called. When they are in the canal - no trouble. If they come up to the parking lot - watch out!

I have my hostel for steemfest booked but will keep looking. It's cheap, well rated and a straight shot on a 30 minute bus to the site. But I might be able to do better.

I saw you slam through on my comments. I really appreciate this so much, @majes.tytyty. I keep swimming here ,but holy cow...

Keep swimming, and stay afloat!! Hopefully, the tide will soon turn, and we'll be able to drift a bit easier, gently and peacefully, down the river.

Woahh this was one was in my favorite music list! Thanks for sharing this!!!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds did a great job producing this great song. I felt every line in the lyrics and that's a great way to know a good music.

By the way I remember that you shared this song in the SC Lyrics challenge Series. I loved it then and I also loved it now. Thanks for sharing!

Hmmm, I did not remember that I had included it in the Lyrics Challenge series. I should've checked, cuz I could have copy-pasted some text, and it would have saved me rewriting the entire post.... Oh well.

Thanks for the heads-up. :-)

In this song true love is expressed, pure love!

Yes, that's true. And it's expressed through pure, true poetry.

Beautiful slow song.

Achingly beautiful, I'd say.

EL AMOR SIEMPRE SERA EL MOTIVO DE MIL CANCIÓN ES MAS Y ENTRE ELLAS SIEMPRE HABRÁ ALGUNAS QUE SE CONVERTIRÁN EN ÉXITOS, EL AMOR ES LA MANIFESTACIÓN MAS GRANDE DE SENTIMIENTOS QUE EL SER HUMANO DESARROLLA DONDE SE PONE EN MANIFIESTO LA CREATIVIDAD , LA PASIÓN LA ENTREGA Y EL COMPROMISO ESA FUERZA QUE NOS LLEVA A TRASPASAR LAS FRONTERAS DE LO ALCANZABLE POR ESTAR AL LADO DE LA PERSONA AMADA.
