“Oh, peace train, Take this country, Come take me home again”

song ~ “Peace Train”
artist ~ Cat Stevens

Now I've been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh, I've been smiling lately, dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be, some day it's going to come
Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh, peace train take this country, come take me home again

Now I've been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh, peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller

Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on now peace train

Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too
Cause it's getting nearer, it soon will be with you
Now come and join the living, it's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer, soon it will all be true

Now I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating, why can't we live in bliss
Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh, peace train take this country, come take me home again   (Image source)

Comments

“Peace Train”  was recorded in 1971, as the masters of war continued to wreak havoc in Vietnam and a couple of its neighboring countries.

Annoyed at Peace? Annoyed at Hope?

During those times of social unrest, some people criticized both Cat Stevens and his song “Peace Train”  for the optimism and hope it expressed. In fact, in 1972, the music journalist Robert Christgau wrote that it left him “annoyed.”

Some “Writer” in the Voice

We’re not sure if Stevens ever responded to that ridiculous accusation, but as Lou Reed once stated, Christgau was just “some asshole in the Village Voice.”

Call for Peace

During the 2003 Iraq War, Stevens said “There is a powerful need for people to feel that gust of hope rise up again.”

He added that “Peace Train”  was his “contribution to the call for a peaceful solution.” And it’s a mighty fine contribution.     (Image source)

These lyrics are touching, I guess we all need that peace train to take us to a better place, where there's no hatred, violence, war, hunger, etc. Oh God please heal this world.

Yes, especially in these times.

WOW "Oh, peace train, Take this country, Come take me home again"
