Leyla McCalla – “The Capitalist Blues”

"The Capitalist Blues” (2018)

In this age of winner-take-all, rainbow capitalism, “The Capitalist Blues”  would serve as an appropriate anthem for more than a few people in many economies around the world.

No Gold, but Plenty of Blue

McCalla sings about how she’s “swimming in an ocean of sharks,”  and about how she’s expected to “give everything”  away to the poor rich folk who have stumbled upon such hard times.

Indeed, it can be “cold, cold world,”  and it’s enough to give anyone the blues. Oh, and as for that pot of gold that’s waiting for you at the end of the rainbow … first you godda get to the rainbow.

Leyla McCalla

Leyla McCalla is an American musician who perfoms both classical music and folk music. Her parents, both of whom had been born in Haiti, were active in human-rights organizations, and her grandfather was the editor of a NYC-based socialist newspaper.

Blue and Other Brighter Colors

After university in New York City, Leyla moved to New Orleans, where she immersed herself in the local musical traditions. She worked on her debut album, “Vari-Colored Songs,”  for 5 years before releasing it.

Drop Out

While Leyla is primarily known as the former cellist of the noted string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops, she also plays the guitar and the banjo. After playing with the CC Drops for several years, she left the band to pursue her solo career.   (Image source)

You keep telling me to climb this ladder
I’ve got to pay me dues
But as I rise, the stakes get higher
I’ve got the Capitalist Blues
And if I give everything
I won’t have much more to lose

I am swimming in an ocean of sharks
They are telling me how I’m gonna make
My little mark, in this cold, cold world
It can be such a cold, cold world

You keep telling me to go a little higher
Try to take a different view
But, you can see, I’m not inspired
I’ve got the Capitalist Blues
And if I give everything
I won’t have much more to lose

It’s not fair, it’s not right
I don’t know what I’m gonna do with my life
It’s not fair, it’s not right
I wasn’t born to just endure all this strife
Tryna make my way, in this cold, cold world
It can be such a cold, cold world

Hi @majes.tytyty,

This is a good song for me right now. I got denied entry to Singapore Monday and now am going to Bangkok on Sunday until Friday. The whole miserable story is here:

https://steempeak.com/esteem/@fitinfun/disaster-on-my-non-singapore-trip-yesterday

I just paid my leases to you and other things I pay on the 1st. I am scrambling to get enough money for the trip now. If you have the power to vote old comments again, I would be so grateful. Thank you for all of your awesome support.

"This too shall pass" but I am feeling really down right now :(

So sorry to hear that, especially after my experience in Vientiane this past April. It was stressful, but at least I got my visa. I sure hope your issue is resolved favorably, and soon.

I traveled to Kampot and Sihanoukville a few years ago. I found the Cambodians quite decent, and enjoyed my time there. I talked with quite a few farangs who live there, and they are happy and content there. Even in Sihanoukville, whose tourist areas and beaches are crowded and not always pleasant, the foreign residents found nice quiet neighborhoods in which to live.

I just gave an armful of your recent posts big upvotes. More to come, but please BE SURE TO REMIND ME. I've godda upvote some Vocab Practice, so I'm gonna keep my Vote Power above 50% now.

All the best. Even for me, I'm getting close to scraping the bottom of my cash barrel, so I'm hoping that Steem rises in price. I'm good for a few months, but I'll need to withdraw some Steem by Oct / Nov.

Hopefully, the price will be high enough that I can even afford a few days at BKK Steemfest.

All the best.

OMG! Thank you so much, @majes.tytyty. I was just claiming rewards before I go to bed, and had to do a huge double take. This is so generous of you. A whole bunch of stress just drained away. I can never thank you enough. Stay tuned for better news and your support means so much to me.

Your thanks is more than enough. ☺

When I read of your plight, I knew I could help you somehow. After a few hours, I knew what I had to do ... that is, do what I can.

It's great to hear that much of your stress "drained away." I know what such stress is like, and I think it's horrible that so many people have to live like that ... for a short time or a longer time.

Also, I'm always glad to be able to help someone get thru any horrible "capitalist blues" they might be enduring. Let's hope this whole crypto revolution upsets the winner-take-all crony capitalist system. Soon.

Cheers!

No kidding! I was getting $3-$5 on my 45+ posts a week for the three blogs - now it is $1. Things were hard enough with the higher payouts. I'm getting more supporters, but their votes are less and less.

You really did help me - I got a hostel space for about what you sent and I m so grateful to you :)

Good to hear!

Yes, I just have one more day now and then back to KL!

TY so much, @majes.tytyty. I will be back when I see your power in high again for sure :)

I was planning a move to Cambodia in Feb anyway. Now it may be much earlier. I have a few friends and connections there now, and the visa issues are fewer.

On top of it all - I have ONE page left in my passport! When it rains it pours lol. There is no Canadian Embassy in Cambodia, so I need to be in KL or Bangkok for that - when I have $250 usd for it.

I seriously need to do better for myself, steem price regardless.

Thank you once again for your endless support - this means so much to me.

Hey, just read this after your other "thanks" comment.
Are you Canadian??? I thought you were from California or thereabouts. Or did you relocate to there from Canada?

I'm from Canada, too, near Niagara Falls.

Have you considered teaching English online, to Chinese kids? I know many people here who are doing that, and they make quite good money. Most platforms do not require any teaching degree, and since the students are kids, it's not very demanding.

2 sites I've heard of are ... https://www.dadaabc.com/teacher/landing

Yes, I'm from the Toronto area, but I lived most of my life in the states - my parents were both American. I left for good when I was 19, I've only been back a few days in 40 years now. I only have Canadian citizenship - not dual.

My last stop in the US was in Cali.

My current wifi does not pass the tests for online teaching. I have really bad wifi now and my "better" wifi in Bangkok did not pass. I would do that work for sure. I have quite a bit of teaching experience.

Love Niagara Falls! I have been there many times, and it is always a thrill.

In these times, you're lucky to have retained your Canuck citizenship!

You are so right about that. I never had the proper references to get the US citizenship, and now I am so glad I don't have it. It is so strange to see the us on the same lists as North Korea and Iran as citizenships that cannot get crypto accounts.
