Get Some Jazz Steemit #4 - Vijay Iyer

in music •  7 years ago

Hey Steemit!

For today's "Get Some Jazz Steemit" I wanted to share with you an amazing version of Michael Jackson "Human Nature" performed by the Vijay Iyer trio.

"Accelerando" is an incredible album by this trio, with Vijay Iyer in Piano and composition, Stephan Crump on double bass and the great Marcus Gilmore on drums).

Funny thing about this, Marcus Gilmore is Roy Haynes grandson.
Roy has been one of the most recognized drummers of the Jazz era, he's about 92 years old and is still performing live.

Even though he has an unique approach to drums and music that allowed him to play with the greatests jazz artists, he's a man who has studied tap dancing for several years, you can hear that in the language he uses for comping in Jazz, and you can even see him performing some tap dancing in the middle of a solo.

Tap dancing has been considered by many drummers as the foundation of comping in Jazz drums.
Early in the 40s and 50s, drummers would study from tap dancers the rhythmic ideas they used when performing, to apply them on the snare drum.

One of many interesting things about tap dancing is that the body has it's own rhythm and needs to breath between ideas, and that's something that even today we apply when playing jazz drums.

I hope you found this interesting and you enjoyed the song.
