in music •  6 years ago

After a late start, the entries for last week's contest have been coming in, and this week was a tough one to judge, as there were so many cool entries.

This week's track takes a different approach, and hopefully we'll get a nice varied range. Keep reading for more details.

🤘🏽No Resteem/Follow/Upvote required🤘🏽

It was really hard to choose winners, but three of them stood out.

Congratulations to these awesome folk and their awesome choice of classic favourites:

  • 2SBI goes to @improv and his Flight of the Conchords track Jenny

  • 1SBI goes to @simonjay and his drunken christmas ballad, Fairytale of New York by The Pogues

Each of you will be getting your SBI in the next day.

Also special mentions and upvotes to the other entries:
@xcountytravelers, @fitinfun, @funnel, @muscara, @sparkesy43.

All of the tracks will be added to the current soundtrack HI-FI MIXTAPE: AFTER THE FORK.

Track 18: A Song From The Year You Were Born

1973:
It was the year the Vietnam War ended, George Lucas released American Graffiti, Supreme Court of the United States rules on Roe v. Wade making abortion a US constitutional right, 200 Oglala Lakota warriors from AIM occupy Wounded Knee as a protest against the broken treaties, the Sydney Opera House was opened, IRA freedom fighters bomb King's Cross in London, the Watergate hearings begin, and the Arab OPEC nations throttle oil production in retaliation against Israel, and Concord flies across the Atlantic.

And I was born, most importantly.

Seriously, the best music was released in this year. I could create a double mixtape and it still wouldn't cover the sheer awesomeness that was being heard. It also probably explains a lot if I was hearing this in the womb and first few months of my life.

What to choose...???...

Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) by George Harrison

CONTEST DETAILS

5 SBI up for grabs!!

This week, I'm changing things up, and making the contest easier and less intensive.

  1. Choose a song from the YEAR YOU WERE BORN.

  2. Post it in the COMMENTS section - either a YouTube link or a link to Spotify or any other media service

  3. Share a small story about WHY you've chosen this track, OR a quirky fact about that year, OR about that track/artist in the context of that year.

  4. I am devoting a total of 5 SBI to this, so I will choose responses based on a combination of the choice of track AND from reading your story about your choice. I may choose 5 different entries at 1 SBI each, or just one entry will get all 5 SBI.

You do not have to upvote or resteem this post!! Although it will be appreciated and received with grace, it isn't a condition of entry - just enter your post as laid out in the guidelines above.

You're invited to vote and comment on others' entries, but again, this is not a condition of entry.

Imagine this song released on your birth month (and year), it's like it was begging me to post it here! Sweet Child o' Mine was GnR's third single, but I feel like it's what put them on the map. One of the most iconic riffs in the history of modern music, too!

Truth be told, it's the first time I've ever searched for songs released on the year I was born. I was surprised to see a lot of classics. I would've chosen Never Gonna Give You Up but upon further research, it seems it was released a year before and only charted in 1988 haha! Awesome concept for a contest!!

OMFGs, CLASSIC!! Those were the days. I think this was my gateway into metal and rock.

Wow tough choice but I am going to go with Belinda Carlisle-Heaven Is A Place On Earth, as I feel its always been song that's played in the background ever since I was born. Its a fitting song I think if you were just put into this earth. The song as been a great reminder that regardless of how bad things are look at the beauty that life gives us. As for facts in 1987 it was the 14th American Music Awards winners were Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie & Alabama also very close to the day I was born George Harrison releases "Got My Mind Set On You"

Have I ever mentioned my teenage boy crush on Belinda Carlisle? Great song.

PINK FLOYD 'Breathe' from 'Dark Side Of The Moon' (1973)
I was also bornt in 1973 so it has been very difficult to choose a track from that year because in my opinion it is one of the best years in rock music history: Led Zeppelin's 'Houses Of The Holy", The Who's 'Quadrophenia', The Stooges' 'Raw Power'or '(pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)' by Lynyrd Skynyrd among many others. But finally I have choosen a song by Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side Of The Moon', my favorite PF album.

The song I have choosen is 'Breathe'. Why? From the first time I listened to Pink Floyd, I associated the band with WHITE colour. Listening to most songs of the band help me to relax, they bring me peace (not all of them, some are even disturbing). I love rock and I love skiing, and in late '80s and early '90s I used to go skiing at least once a month during winter. Those days I had a Walkman. For young people, just let me explain you that a (Sony) Walkman was a gadget to play the music recorded in a cassette.

So I used to go skiing with my Walkman, listening to Pink Floyd while going up & down the mountains.

Nowadays, when I listen to Pink Floyd, memories of those years come to my mind.

'Breathe' by Pink Floyd 👇👇

HAHA.... oh the joy of the Walkman. If you never had a Walkman, you have never lived.

I git this when I was 9 (I think).... back in 1982

That second grey box to the right was an extra battery pack... it took 2x D-cell batteries. The idea was that if the batteries within the Walkman ran out, you had this extra battery pack to power your Walkman... and just neatly clips onto your belt next to your walkman... Can you imagine carrying all that gear around just to listen to just 90 minutes or less of music???

Pink Floyd. The BEST. Dark Side was my 'gateway' also, although that was much later in the misty times of CD's..... I was going to choose a track from this album, but I've already chosen Time for a previous track in the mixtape.

Possibly the best album release of 1973? I'm calling it......

Never knew about the extra battery!
We were so happy to have 90 minutes of music while going for a walk or a run.
How many great moments I enjoyed with Walkmans!

I love pink floyd! After smoking a joint, who would not go to the dark side of the moon while enyoing the song!

"Poupée de cire, poupée de son" - France Gall, the song that won the 1965 Eurovision song contest

Interesting not only because Serge Gainsbourg wrote it. France Gall at first glance seems to be just another cute French girl singing a pop chanson - and she surely was. But even in this old video you can see that's there's more to her, that she has a mind of her own.. And there was more than singing sweet little songs with a great voice: in the eighties, more than 20 years later, she had a come back with Ella, elle l'a", a song about Ella Fitzgerald.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the song, and thank you for making me go out and find it!

I'm probably older than most of your, so you may not have ever heard of this song. I don't listen to much music from the 1950s, so nothing stood out for me. I went with a top song from my actual birthday so it was narrowed down quite a bit. I researched to find out something about the life of Ricky Nelson, so here it is:

Ricky Nelson (born Eric Hillard Nelson) started out as a star in the radio and TV series “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”. He started his singing career in 1957. This song was #1 on August 9, 1958, which is my birthday. When he came out with this song, “Poor Little Fool, it was the first #1 hit on Billboard magazine’s brand new Hot 100 Chart. In 1987 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ricky life ended tragically at the early age of 45 in 1985, when the plane carrying his band crashed landed in a cow pasture less than 2 miles from a landing stip in Dallas, TX. Of the 9 passengers, 7 were killed in the crash.

I know this song! I had no idea that he was also a TV star.

That was amazing information, I had no idea he died in a plane crash, thanks for posting!

do i need to say something, i already won i think :P

I had no clue this was released when i was born and imagine that i have seen the movie. So except the fact that the song is now iconic the movie war pretty good and with many meanings especially for that year. They say that the movie didn't go that good though and the song made it more popular. It was the number one song in billboard and after that the next rap song that got 1 place was 8 years after!

Also this song isn't exactly original as they took a sample called pastime paradise from Stevie Wonder ofc by his permission but he insisted that they had to remove all the profanity and "bad words"!

I love Gangsta's Paradise! No where near the year of my birth so I couldn't chose it, but thanks for bringing the video to the contest!

Yeah, cool track. I remember when this came out. I think the film is called Dangerous Minds....?

yep Dangerous minds!

I've chosen a song, but I'm loathe to reveal my age... what if, instead, you give me a year that you'd guess was the year I was born, and I'll choose a song from that year instead?

I don’t think anyone here will judge you... I know I certainly won’t... 😊🤗
