For the website of our band Dead Man’s Boogie, we challenged ourselves to list our top ten albums. While this is a nearly impossible task as there are so many great albums out there, it is also a great opportunity to look back and reflect which albums really made an impact. I recently started (but haven’t finished) with the Top 7 challenge and I will continue introducing some great bands and albums here. I have the impression that there is a lot of art (paintings, drawings, photography) on Steemit but maybe not so much music (except for the amazing Open Mic Contest).
So let’s start with a band that really blew me away with their musical and technical abilities: Symphony X. I was always a fan of innovative bands and especially love the Prog Rock/Metal genre. But the main weakness many of those bands are facing is that they get lost in technical virtuoso parts and do not focus on the song itself. Additionally, many of those bands lack of a good singer. However, Symphony X has the whole package: awesome musicians, great songwriting and in my opinion one of the best singers that is currently out there: Russell Allen – here is a video of him singing for the multi-platinum rock theater experience Trans-Siberian Orchestra:
But let’s get back to Symphony X. Let me introduce you to some songs and albums and let the music do the talking:
The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Many fans consider this their best album - probably they are right!
Of Sins and Shadows
First song I heard from them. It was on a Rock Hard sampler. Love the Queen chorus parts in the middle and of course the Guitar – Keyboard solo duels.
The Accolade
Epic song, epic “squire to knight” / “prince to king” –based lyrics with an awesome Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells part in the middle.
Twillight in Olympus
Not as good as Divine Wings of Tragedy, but also contains some amazing music.
Through the Looking Glass
This is 13 minutes epic about Alice in Wonderland. Pure magic!
Alice... run, Alice!
The New Mythology Suite
A great concept album about the myth of Atlantis. It contains one of my all-time favorite songs:
Communion and the Oracle
The Odyssey
Comes with a 24-minute-long musical interpretation of the Homeric epic:
The Odyssey
Paradise Lost
Inspired by John Milton's epic poem of the same name.
Paradise Lost
The title tracke itself is out of this world!
Iconoclast
Machines taking over, so the production is also a bit colder and slight industrial influences can be noticed.
Children of a Faceless God
Underworld
Based on Dantes Inferno and Orpheus in the Underworld
Nevermore
Thanks a lot for reading and listening! I hope I could get across the brilliance of this band a little bit.
