Ya Got to Go Through It to Get To It

WHAT IF, in a hypothetical society, it was simply illegal for you to go out and look for a job? What if, instead, you were required to stay at home, in the classroom, or wherever you can study and work on developing your talents and improving your skills, your abilities, whatever your chosen field.

Similarly, WHAT IF it was the prospective employers - companies - who were required to do ALL the looking, to go out and scout for the best of the best - the talented, the skilled, in whatever field of expertise was needed by the employer.

(They would of course pay well those whom they hire, for these top players would be worth it to the company).

Isn't that what we accept and have come to expect of major league professional athletic teams? Isn't that more our less how future star athletes get their "jobs"? We do not see great athletes pounding the pavement, submitting resumés, looking for interviews, calling up coaches and near-begging for a "job" as a player on the team, do we? (smile)

It doesn't seem to me that the really talented players have to do such "footwork," because they have become so good at what they do. Even the rookies are already near-experts. They have abilities that they have cultivated over a long period of hard work and practice - so they stand out - and the "companies" (teams) beat a path to their doors. Teams may even compete for the same player, in the hopes of landing the best of the best for their unit. Having the best players means a higher income for all concerned, lots more money, therefore, much rests on finding true talent, and lots of it.

Pro sports organizations simply will not/cannot hire untalented people to play for their teams (no matter how good they look, physically-speaking). One does not often hunt through fashion model CVs for a star athlete; it's always about "can he play, or not?".

When it comes to assessing players' abilities in the games, recruiters aren't stupid. Neither are fans. You probably wouldn't be able to "fake it 'til you make it" and then hope to last long playing for a major league athletic team. Wouldn't happen.

So, why does a pop musician, supposedly a star "athlete" in HIS field, believe that he can "fake it" to make it to the top of the music industry?

Ah, now that is an interesting question, and its answer will open up a whole 'nother can-o-worms in this continuum.
