Good morning everyone,
I would like to make a simple guide of what you can find on a piano score because recently I started playing the piano again, I never learned to read a score correctly and I had to find the information by myself on the Internet and it's really boring to watch videos or incomplete guides or even have to pay for so little. I'm not saying it's going to be perfect because I'm also learning and I'm probably not going to use the right vocabulary, but these are the basics so I'm going to approach them in a simplified way.
Also, if you know someone who wants to start the piano, don't hesitate to show him this guide and encourage him play this wonderful instrument :D Also, someone who already knows the piano won't learn anything new so this is for beginners and if I say something wrong, it's better to correct me :x
For those who don't know anything about music, there are 7 notes (in the order I learned it : C, D, E, F, G, A, B) and on a piano keyboard, this cycle is repeated throughout the keyboard. To find the note C when you look at your keyboard, it is the note next to the 2 black ones next to each other.
On the image, I call "group" what we see visually repeating itself: 2 black notes then 3 black notes and this helps to find the C in the middle of the keyboard. This C in the middle is important because the partitions are approximately oriented around this point, the left hand will be on the left of the central C and the right hand on the right (in most cases, in the beginning at least).
Then, on a score we find lines attached to each other. The upper ones are for the right hand and the lower ones for the left hand.
Now, to be able to find the notes on the score because I guess you still don't understand much at the moment, just follow the notes on this image :
Of course, we can go up and down as much as we want :
To know which note is the central C, it will always be the note on the line below the first line and the first line will be the note "E". For the left hand, the central C will be the first note above the first line and the first line will be the note "la". From there, note by note you can find the other notes on the score.
There will always be 5 lines represented on the score for the right hand and the left hand, so it is difficult to make a mistake following the images. For the moment, all notes are played on the white keys of the piano, the rest will be for a future guide.
Small tips to recognise easily notes on the score : Have points of reference
Mines :
Watch out! The two C's on the image are the same note on the keyboard.
In the next article I will explain the time of the notes, how to know at what speed to play the piece and the alterations (black notes). I hope this article has taught you something!
Have a nice day!
A perfect starting guide! If you'd like to know some titles of books that are useful for learning music theory I could give you some that I used for my study :)
