Rock has so many myths spinning around, could this be one of them?
Ozzy Osbourne needs no introduction, rockstar known for being the lead singer of Black Sabbath, for his solo career and good, for having a reality show quite bizarre that many will remember from watching on MTV . But let's face it that his fame comes more from the side of music. It was the year 1982, and Ozzy (already soloist) won covers and fans, but not for the right reasons. Although the majority of the media recognized the talent of the artist, they did not keep silent about his undeniable addiction to narcotics, as well as that episode in which he tore the head off the pigeons ; the beginning of Osbourne madness .
Ozzy had already grabbed headlines a year earlier for a controversial meeting with CBS Records executives. The musician planned to finish his appearance releasing three pigeons (alive, of course) in the air; a spectacular moment that turned into a disaster when Ozzy decided to appear drunk to the encounter and did not hesitate to argue with a public relations employee of the company. Mick Wall, a Black Sabbath publicist, picks up the fact in a book of the same name, claiming that Ozzy said: "I took one of those pigeons off and bit its head off just to shut him up. Then I did it again with the next dove, spitting its head on the table ... It was there when they threw me out. "
But lets talk about the bat :
Mark Neal was the material author of the folly of his friends. he was 17 when everything happened. The young man planned to attend the concert of Ozzy and his friends urged him to get the musician's attention . How? With his brother's deceased pet. Two weeks earlier, Neal's younger brother took the bat home. He brought it from school, alive and flapping, but, logically, it did not last long with life. Aware of the musician's "carnivorous" reputation, Neal's friends told him to take the body to the presentation, seal it in a bag and hide it in his jacket. At the right moment, he had to cast him on stage. And he did.
Did Ozzy know it was a real bat?
At the concert, Ozzy was promoting his second solo album: Diary of a Madman (1981). In full presentation, the infamous bat corpse fell on his feet. Ozzy did not know that what they had thrown at him was a real dead animal (after all, who would?). It seemed to glisten between the bright lights and believing that it was rubber, the musician took it in his hands and ripped the head with his teeth for the fans to explode in excitement. Things did not go as expected, and can be seen in his face of disgust.
"Immediately, however, something felt bad. Very bad. For starters, my mouth was instantly filled with this hot, sticky liquid, with the worst aftertaste you can imagine. I could feel it staining my teeth and running down my chin. Then the head in my mouth twitched. 'Oh, fuck me,' I thought. Do not tell me I just ate a fucking bat. "
So Ozzy recounts the incident in I Am Ozzy , his memoir released in 2009. He also remembers with disgust the amount of injections he received in the hospital that he came immediately to protect himself from rabies.
Apparently the musician was encouraged to behead live pigeons, but a dead bat was too much, even for Ozzy. Either way this "mistake" earned him a more lasting fame in the world of Rock And Roll.
