In may 1956, Elvis performed the song for the first time at the Memphis festival, and in July it was released on the back of the single “Don't Be Cruel”. Soon the record was reissued with “Hound Dog” on the front side. Both versions of the single were a huge success, and the song triumphantly went on top of different charts.

"[Pop music] has reached its lowest level thanks to Elvis Presley's "wheezing and rumbling." Viewers could see this during the recent show Milton Berle. Musically, Elvis was terrible, but he was shaking his hips cheerfully. His speech was vulgar, thoroughly imbued with animalism and indecent hints, which place — in a brothel. What's striking is that burl and NBC have released this broadcast."
