Angel of Montgomery - cover

in music •  6 years ago  (edited)

Last month was the first time, in what seemed like forever, for me to learn a cover song. It was a lot of fun trying to make it, somewhat, my own.

Thought to do the same thing this month, so during my 4 days of caregiving with my mother Angel of Montgomery was decided upon and played with. It is normally sung from a female's first person perspective. Some male notables have covered it, such as John Mayall as well as John Prine, himself.

It felt a bit strange singing it with the first person perspective of a female, so hopefully the Prine purests out there will forgive me for having played with the lyrics to make it a third person point of view.

After getting home this morning my thought was that the piano may be a good instrument for it as none were available at my mother's to try my changes. Anyway, here's first take with a stage stealing drum machine at the end. 😎

Any male vocalists are welcome to use these lyric changes.

She's an old woman.
Named after her mother.
Her husband's another
Child that's grown old.

If dreams were thunder
And lightning desire
Their old home would'a burnt down
A long time ago.

(Chorus)
Send her an angel to fly her from Mongomery.
Send her a postcard of an old rodeo.
Just give her something that she can hold on to.
Cuz believin in livin is a hard way to go.

When she was a young girl
She had a young cowbow.
He weren't much to look at,
But a free ramblin man

That was a long time
And although she tried hard
The years they just rolled by
Like a busted down dam.

(Chorus)

There's flies in the kitchen.
She hears their buzxin'.
But she aint done nothin'
Since she woke up today.

Thinkin: How the hell can a person
Go to work in the mornin'
And come home in the evening
And have nothin' to say?

(Chorus)

Didn't know you played the piano dude! First thought. Second one: Why is this not an #openmic entry!?

Thanks, Lyndsay! The drum machine finale still cracks me up. 😆

by the way its completely different than their version but very nice listening
cheers man

Yeah, the idea was to alter the lyrics for a male vocalist. John Mayhall just sounded silly singing, "I am an old woman" in my opinion. 😎

i know what you mean lol
cheers

I flag trash. You have received a flag.

I flag trash. You have received a flag.

Great! This is a really, really cool version. Very after hours in a smoke-filled bar kind of version. Super!

Thanks for checking out the tune as well as your kind review, @borjan. Guess there is a whole generation, now, never to experience the smoke filled bar. 😎

:) True. That lovely poisonous atmosphere is gone in smoke and disappeared.

Thanks for the tune, my friend! Smooooth.

Thanks. It just seemed wrong to hear John Mayall sing, "I am an old woman". 😎

Thank you for your music and steem loan. Semi-retiring but maybe see you around : ))

... maybe see you around : ))
