JACK HARLON & THE DEAD CROWS - Hymns (2018)

in music •  6 years ago

Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows' long-awaited debut album Hymns continues the tale of notorious outlaw and self-appointed redeemer of the west, Jack Harlon. The story focuses on the trials and tribulations of various characters within its apocalyptic universe. Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows is a Psych Doom project from Australia, focusing on the exploits of a drug-addicted outlaw in the west. In Hymns case, you can judge by the cover itself as the artwork is a mystical, magical tripped out piece of goat art by Adam Burke that looks like the record sounds. The concept album plays like a soundtrack to a Tarantino movie set in the landscape of an outlaw’s travels across the barren desert, high on peyote and searching for a way back to planet earth. This is heavy, trippy, fuzzy and full of bluesy doom and hooligan twang.

I have a new favorite. Hymns is great and it's all over the place in some ways. Very heavy when it comes to the riffs, but not always. There's an almost surfy sound to some of the guitar stuff at points too. I will be coming back to this one a lot, I think.

Part of the reason I like this so much may have to do with the fact that sometimes it reminds me a bit of All Them Witches.
