AFRICAN MUSIC

One thing I have learnt as an African musician about the aesthetic of African music is that it is not always about the notes you play or how well you have mastered an established art form.. African music to me is more about idiomatic expressivity, creating a melodic and harmonic idiom(concept ) that makes you stand out in a crowd. I believe African music will grow much bigger the sooner our musicians come to understand this fact. You can never mistaken "Fela Kuti's " sound for another player even though his tone and dexterity on the horn did not measure up to the so called standard but he had a raw, honest, unique and beautiful tone. It doesn't have to be the so called nice to be accepted, just make a statement with your music and you'll be accepted. orchestre poly.jpgdownload.jpg

I subscribe to the assertion. Coincidentally while reading this I was listening to Fela's African Woman. 😁❤

Ethiopia produced some of the best funk music ever in the 70's!!
