Music Record Deals: Why I Don't Want One (Original Blog)

in music •  8 years ago

Unless the record deal was from one of my best friends, and, or it was a company label that we owned together with ideals and values that we see eye to eye on, I wouldn't accept a record deal from any music industry company because I know what to expect and look out for in terms of protecting my creative aspirations, and my own vision

The music industry is 98% business, 2% music. And depending on the fine print of your contract and the length there of, that 2% could also be the percentage of what you're entitled to for the music you distribute through the record label that represents you.

I have been approached a few times before to join a label, but I like to be my own boss when it comes to managing my own music career. When you are passionate about something, it is best not to always throw a middle man in-between unless you really know what service they are providing you to elevate your progress to the next level.

I get to go to the studio whenever I want, write whatever I want to write about, perform music wherever I want, and to whomever I choose, and I can get involved in any kind of collaborations that I feel are purposeful and impactful in the grand scheme of things towards being a positive influence in the world.
These kind of creative freedoms are priceless, not to mention staying true to my own values and morals in regards to the path of success I have continually created for myself through hard work, consistency, growth and originality.

I am not telling anyone not to get a record deal, but for me, it isn't something I am outwardly seeking. The community on Steemit is an amazing place to showcase my music, as well as in intimate settings and open mic out in the real world where I am a reachable person and not just a mainstream media portrayal of the marketed version of myself as a corporately funded artist.
Who knows, maybe I will have my own record label down the road, anything is possible, but my main focus is my music, the message and intentions behind the songs I create and perform and the lasting effects they have on all generations who receive what I share with them.

If music is your passion, keep at it, and stay smart with how you move in your own music career. This applies to any profession, I wouldn't jump at the first contract deal opportunity thrown at me, we never know what will happen in the future, so I just keep a positive outlook and keep improving myself on what I need to focus on. Time to practice piano and work on some new material

Hey there, have you looked into Label Worx https://www.label-worx.com/
A platform where you can release your tunes for free on all the major digital platforms. For an excellent rundown on how it works check out the following run down by Danny J Lewis on his YouTube Channel

No I didn't know about this at all, thanks so much for the comment and the insight, I'll be sure to look into this, hope its a new avenue to explore :)

Yeah, I'd personally stay out of a record deal, but it can be good for some people.

I completely agree, it is at best circumstantial and preferential to the individual. I wish all musicians their own success however they view such success, thanks for your comment and insight
