Guitar Tutorial - Creative Lick #1 - Ascending Fives , Hybrid Pentatonics

in music •  7 years ago

Hello Steemit friends ,

Today I am signing in for a quick ''Creative Lick'' lesson , i will share with you some useful ''musical statements'' that you can adapt and incorporate into your own playing .

A ''lick'' for me translates into a ''musical word'' , and putting words together you can make a sentence . I am fan of using just a little statement and put it together in some creative way to make a bigger one , this way it is easier to build up , and it also is easier to adapt to various situations.

This lick consists of only 5 notes ! Using this little nugget I make a bigger musical statement.

So , here is the lick first :

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Fn-XXnBDGtzdi2j8B-Y-VkXas1hUzNGp

As you can see , this is just a little 5 note phrase that ascends , each time you see a downstroke it is the beginning of the new 5-note sequence .

What I just did was use two minor pentatonics to give it a more ''colorful'' and ''open'' sound .

The first two sequences are in Am , then the three next ones are in Em , then it comes back to Am , this way :

Am ---> Am---> Em---> Em--->Em --->Am ---> Am ( you could arrange them any way you wanted , i just happened to like this sequence today )

  • I like odd note groupings because each time a new sequence starts it is displaced rhythmically , this means it doesn't start in the ''1'' of the next beat , giving it an illusion that you are playing faster than you actually are !

So how does this lick sound in a musical context?? Well, here is a little demo:

I chose a more legato sound for this particular sequence , but you could try and play it differently to see what effect you can get out of it . I'm speeding it up each time and inserting some improv between them to keep it in context of a ''real'' musical situation. ( I'm still in my bedroom without wearing any shoes.....so .. it's still a fake setting.. hahaha )

Here it is slow:

Oh , and by the way this lick has a little ''Hybrid picking'' sequence

What is Hybrid picking?? This just means we are combining the use of the pick with some finger-style playing, a little hybrid of both , hence the name.

Here is a little video with the right hand angle:

The sequence is simple.

Downstroke --> Hammer-on ---> Middle finger ---- Ring Finger ----> Hammer - on

Then it just repeats over and over.

Here is the backing track I practiced this lick today:

Hope you find this little lick and sequence useful , maybe you can incorporate it into your playing , try changing it , adapt it , play it in a different order , you can make a lot of interesting sounds from a simple concept! Get creative with it ;)

As always , I am open for any questions!

Thanks for reading and listening.
