Thanks for bringing this topic to wider audience. Even some most seasoned guitarists have very limited knowledge about different string instruments. It's always good to listen music which is played with unconventional instruments.
One thing I have noticed is that fan fretted guitars are coming to main stream. They have been making their debut for quite some time, but now there seems to be some models even on big guitar makers like Ibanez and Dean. 6+ string guitars are also more popular than ever.
Three of my favorite ground braking guitar builders:

- Stainberg style guitars, but alot advanced building techniques and hardware.
https://www.facebook.com/oniguitars/ - Look at the frets. LOOK AT THEM!

Acoustics with carbon fiber, extra bass strings and fanned frets. Check out their customs.
This guy has probably no need for bass player. Ever.

Very cool guitar player on the 8-string guitar.
Those Strandberg guitars look like they would be fun to play. Have you played one?

2016 Germany musik messe, but only briefly. Lots of thought has gone to ergonomics and they have this feeling that you can play better with them than other guitars.
Actually, I tried to build a headless with same idea, but, it wasn't near as good as the original.
