Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Copy/paste from other resources without source recognition is not appreciated in the Steemit community; We even have services such as @steemcleaners downvoting such posts since plagiarism is against the rules as brought forward in the Steemit whitepaper . Most of the high value voters will therefore not vote for such posts, also curation teams will not vote for such post. Most of these individuals and groups will check for plagiarism. When mentioning sources, you increase the change getting higher value votes, for good articles. Curation teams, like @illuminati-inc, @curie, @ocd, @sndbox may demand even more, own writing instead of copy/paste with source recognition. Wish you a lot of success in our community.
