Progressive Metal/Rock Bands - Part 1 - Djent

Today I want to present a selection of progressive metal bands and some of their songs. Some of them are melodic, not too heavy and sort of radio friendly, others go into the opposite direction ;-)

This post is mainly about bands that are assigned to the category Djent - which is mainly a guitar playing technique, but it also created its own sub-genre.

Scale the Summit

The call them self instrumental progressive metal, but in my opinion their style is not really metal. The adjective progressive totally fits: complex, playful, interesting rhythmic play and many transitions.

A song from this year's record. It transports a catchy groove and shows some changes in their playing style.

Another cool song with a pretty unique music video. A little heavier but it has also this mellowness.

Tesseract

I had the pleasure to see them live twice and it was amazing - both times. It is always a pleasure to watch the bass player when he freaks out. Actually I prefer the new singer (was also on older records) with his raw voice. He can be heard on Messenger and Deception - which does not mean that Nocturne is a bad song!

Volumes

The Volumes are a metalcore/djent band from LA. Although they sound quite heavy they are easy to listen (in my opinion). My favorite is Edge of the Earth - most of the time played in my car when I drive home after a stressful day at work.

Sky Harbor

A great multinational band project that emerged 2012 during the djent hype. A new record is expected in 2018 and let us hope the rumors are correct! Their last album came out in 2014 and was called "Guiding Lights".

But they were not inactive in the last years. Their last single "Chemical Hands" -  was released in 2016:
