Hanging Out With My Favorite Band O.A.R.

For 20 years now I have been a huge fan of the band O.A.R. If you are not familiar with them check out their song "Crazy Game of Poker". I was introduced to them when they were just a college jam band at Ohio State and I was a middle school kid attending a baseball camp in Florida. My roommate played me their CD and I was hooked!

My wife and I with Marc and Benji backstage before their last show at 1st Ave.

Fast forward to today and I have been lucky enough to see them perform live every chance I've got when they visit Minnesota. That is probably 13 times or so...I can't keep track. They put on one hell of a show! I love them because I organically grew up with them. When I would try and get my friends to listen to them in middle school they said they "sucked" and "that music is horrible". Junior/Senior year of high school all the sudden that changed. They toured with the Dave Matthew's Band and it was the coolest thing to see an O.A.R. show. Funny how that happens, right?

So here I am a huge fan boy of this band and one of my best friends from college happens to like them as well. Long story short he has a really sweet job that connects with with a lot of people from a lot of cool industries. He manages to strike up a relationship with the band and Marc the lead singer. After a show a couple years ago my buddy calls me up and asks if I wanted to join him after the show for food and drinks with the band. The obvious answer was YES! Ever since then it's been VIP and hanging with the band! The guys are really down to earth and gracious to share their time with us before and or after shows in Minneapolis. They said to let them know if we ever travel to see them and they would take care of us. I haven't taken them up on that, but would love to some day.

Meeting people you idolize is a really cool experience. I thought the feeling you get from meeting someone the first time would fade away, but it really hasn't. Maybe because they only come to town once every year or two. I am super grateful for the experiences and opportunities I have been afforded and don't take them for granted. It will likely be another year or two until I see them again, but I already can't wait!

Do you have a similar experience you can share?
Let me hear about it in the comments.
