Contact, man. That movie freaked the snot out of me when I first saw it. Loved it.

Really? Why did it freak you out?

SPOILER ALERT.

I don't know how familiar you are with the plot, but basically it's that aliens send a message to Earth telling humans how to build a space travel device (like to send people through wormholes, though I don't remember if wormholes was the actual explanation for it) and the gubmint builds one and sends Foster's character into it. As she's traveling, she's speaking what she's observing for the cameras that the humans attached to the device, but a ghostly second version of her appears and starts speaking her lines a couple seconds before she actually speaks them… Then when she gets to where she's going, the alien she meets tells her that those aliens didn't even build the wormholes or whatever and didn't actually understand how they worked… an older and even more sophisticated alien race had built them and the newer race had just found them and learned how to use them. The wise and powerful aliens have wise and powerful aliens!

…I guess you had to have been there.

Oh I know the story well, been a fan of Sagan for a long time. Just wasn't sure what scared you. The fact that the aliens didn't build the interstellar travel device, but some older, crazier aliens did?

Both! I mean, that part isn't so scary as it was kind of mind-blowing… at the time, anyway.

I haven't read any of Sagan's other works, but after enjoying the movie, I did read the book and enjoyed it as well.
