Well one of my top 10 concert moments would have to be my first. I still have somewhere, the stub of this concert. I'm searching for the stub, not that it would help much because the print has worn down. I carried it around in my billfold for several yrs. as a reminder.

The venue was the Las Vegas Convention Center 1971, '72 or '73. Specifically Dec. 31st, New Years Eve. Cost of the ticket? An astronomical amount of $25.00/ticket. That price though included a buffet meal and champagne. Of course, I was under age so couldn't have the champagne and if you wanted the buffet you had to give up your ticket stub. I could have just paid $12.50 for the concert w/out the buffet. What? First concert experience, I don't think so. That ticket actually cost me $50. That's part of the story.

You see we, my brother and I, bought our tickets like 3 or 4 months ahead of the concert. Our mistake was letting my mom take care of the tickets for us. You see, I had a step grandmother who was a Bible Thumping, not-sparing-the-rod Christian. Someone who hated and despised Rock n' Roll music. It was a tool of the devil, that "voodoo beat". This grandma played a major role in my rejecting Christianity. I thought, "If this is what a "Christian" is, I don't want any part of it.

Well, close to the concert date, we couldn't find the tickets. We searched the whole trailer, twice. No luck. I have my suspicions, Grandma was the first suspect. She said it's a sign from God. You were not meant to go to that concert. The Convention Center walls will come crumbling down from that vile rock music. We never did find out if she was the culprit, I asked my mom when I was an adult and she feigned innocence.

So we had to buy another set of tickets, that's why the $50 price tag

The concert was great. Filled to capacity seating. I got to hear my favorite song, "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)", the bands first top 40 hit, reaching #22 on the charts. The Convention Center didn't collapse. Founding member Mark Farner is a Christian.

I'm a Christian.

Wow, what a change.

Just last year I was able to see GFRR for free at the Des Moines Arts Festival. Only Don Brewer(drums, lead vocals) and Mel Schacher(bass guitar) were still in the group. My brother was with me along with my wife, Deb.

In looking back, I can see that my step grandma was only wanting something good for me. I am sure she prayed for me and my salvation throughout the years. Sometimes we as Christians want the blessings we have to be experienced by someone else, so badly, that we turn that person away, just as my grandma did to me.

I came to Christ voluntarily,

the thump from the Bible,

up alongside the head,

wasn't necessary.

1 Peter 5:5-7
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
