Alternative Weekend – Genesis, Mike Oldfield, PJ Harvey

in music •  6 years ago  (edited)

I have been posting most weekends using @detlev’s #metalweekend tag, but my main love of music is progressive and alternative music. Some of my posts have included these songs, but I feel they are not keeping with the spirit of metal.

I will continue to post article’s using #metalweekend occasionally but feel I have more to offer regarding these other genre’s that I am more familiar with.

Introducing #alternativeweekend. Post an article that highlights THREE great songs that are either progressive or alternative and use the tag #alternativeweekend.

If you have a short story or something to offer regarding an opinion on your songs, then share it with us!

Genesis – Dodo // Lurker

Is this the hidden gem on a truly awful Genesis album? In 1981 I bought the ‘Abacab’ album on the strength on the fantastic ‘Duke’ and was sorely disappointed. So much that I missed this song. The vinyl long play sat un-played on my shelf for many years before I dumped my whole collection around 1998.

Years later when mp3 files were the standard, I re-listened to the Abacab album. It was still terrible besides the title track and possibly "Me and Sarah Jane", but how had I missed this great song first time around?

Mike Oldfield - Punkadiddle

My introduction to Mike Oldfield came about by accident as most of mine have. I had just started a new job and was in the car of my temporary mentor. He switched on the rustic car audio system which was then cassette based and this song entered my ears.

It must have been the guitar that caught my attention. It’s quite a cheesy tune in parts but has some good electric guitar riffs. From here it was Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations; I listened to a lot of his music and was forever an entranced fan.

PJ Harvey – A Perfect Day Elise

I have mixed feelings about Polly Jane, she’s different enough to attract my attention but outside of the singles (none of which have been hits), her music doesn’t really resonate with me.

The singles however are a different story, and as this article has been a little ‘proggy’ today, I need to throw in some alternative to mix it up a bit. At least we a have a proper video to go with this track.

In the spirit of @detlev’s original idea, you need to remember one thing.

Pump up the volume, PLAY IT LOUD!

I don't have that Genesis album, but I know the song from a live album. Duke is great, but they tended to lose my interest as time went on. I know Tubular Bells plus some other Oldfield. There was a good documentary about him a couple of years back. I've heard bits of PJ, but nothing has made me want to buy anything yet. I know a lot of people rate her. Thanks for the suggestions

Duke was the turning point for sure, but there are a few gems on the later albums, but you have to dig to get them. I post some more of these on a future one perhaps.

I do love those 'rockumentary' things, you learn so much from them, I could watch them all day.

I very much like Mike Oldfield. Not everything is equal, to me at least, as I think some of his albums are rather "experimental". But he's one of those that I always try to (re)listen to once in a while.
I am fond of the whole Music of the Spheres, albeit it tends to the classical..

That piece from PJ Harvey is cool, I need to find others. Any recommendations?

Mr Oldfield does lean to the classical side even with this original offerings. That is my pick from PJ, there are others which are OK, but none which I really listen too.

The question for you is, what is alternative? Prog is fairly well defined. 90's indie alternative is where most of my musical love is based, does that fit your definition?

It does, but there's no hard fixed rules about it. The PJ track is also what I would call alternative.

OK thanks, just pushed up my first post

I've never heard them before (sure, my hubby already heard Dodo by Genesis ^^), so I have to thank you to share them here. Just today, me and my hubby was talking about the music from Uk and how alternative it was thinking about the same years here in Italy. During those years, in Italy, there were many melodic songs and absolutely no alternative, just few singers and bands played something different, everything was so "quiet" in the music scenes until the '90. Today we was talking about Genesis, sure, but also Pink Floyd, Bowie (ok, I'm a big fan of Bowie's songs since I was 14) and others. When I was young I used to listen Oldfield too, but I didn't know the song in this post ^^

Its an obscure Mike Oldfield song, but I don't like to just post songs.. there has to be a story too :) It was a long time ago, another time but the memory remains.

I am a huge Genesis fan, but they went decidedly off from 'Abacab' going forward, anything before this, Collins or Gabriel I love.

Metal? You mean there is something beyond Scorpions? Really? :)

I'm listening to John Prine. There's an alternative for you. I am playing it loud, at least 3 on the 10 scale...

I like your choices, and appreciate hearing other music. Thanks for yours.

I can't believe I still haven't participated in #metalweekend... it is on my to do list, and now so is #alternativeweekend! Hopefully soon!!

We talked about this months ago, you are indeed slacking badly!

Hahah shameful I know! I have a few songs that helped me so much this week, so I might just finally share :)
