How many songs can you think of that have a really good part that is usually close to the end of the song, and you listen to it in anticipation of this?
You will know the answer to this question.
How many songs have you missed because you listened to the first 30 seconds, but missed ‘that good bit’ that was close to the end because you thought the song was a ‘duffer’?
You can’t possibly answer this question because you don’t know the answer.
In the first instance, I’m talking about those songs and particular parts that have you playing Air Guitar, shaking your head with your eyes scrunched up while literally intoxicated in the music.
Maybe this only happens to certain people who have the ability to fully immerse themselves and be part of the music. I know I am one of these people, and if you are not then you may not understand this concept, and think I’m a complete lunatic.
The truth is, songs build up and they tend to leave the killer part close to the end of the song. It would really be no good at all if it was in reverse, would it?
What if you could have a sneak preview of the candy?
Is it really cheating by having a taste of the icing before biting into the cake? I know I would love to hear from some of your snippets of ‘good bits’, as it may well introduce me to new music.
Some of you know I have a problem getting into music I have not heard before and sometimes have to listen to a song to dozens of times before it sinks in. If I could just hear a little of that candy it might crack the nut quicker.
I would like to present to you some songs which to my mind contain those ‘candy pieces’ in terms of guitar resonating sounds or solos in some cases. They may not appeal to you but they sure do it for me.
Each one of the following has me pumping up the volume to a level where people think I may be a little insane, while immersing myself into the song. I just hope nobody is looking while I’m doing this.
I will point out the part in the song where I think the ‘candy part’ starts. This is not to say the rest of the song is not worth listening too, far from it. Most songs are ones you probably have not heard of.
I won’t be introducing you to the solo from ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ as good as it because chances are you have already heard it before many times.
One last thing before you listen to any of these which is quite critical. If you want top become immersed, turn the volume up very high!
Lovers of Today – Pretenders
The Pretenders broke on to the scene in 1979, and most people have heard their big hit, Brass in Pocket, but this album track had my attention from the first minute.
It is one of the very rare songs that instantly resonated with me, and that guitar that enters later is just one of those resonating moments. I just love Chrissie Hynde.
Start it at 03:20, Candy starts at 03:30.
Tango in the Night – Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac found their audience with this album in the Mid 1980’ again and had a few hits from it. The title track is not really one of my favourites and I could well have missed the fantastic Lindsey Buckingham solo outro if I hadn’t bought the album at the time of release.
If I have any criticism of this piece it is simply that it’s not long enough and fades out too early.
Start it at 02:31, Candy starts at 02:41
.
Duke’s Travels – Genesis
This almost instrumental piece by the evolving Genesis at the time is a step back to their progressive days. It is perhaps my favourite piece off the ‘Duke’ album but the end is what makes my hair stand on end.
That build up and piece of soaring guitar is just incredible. Listen to the candy but do yourself a favour and listen to all of it.
Start it at 05:19, Candy starts at 05:45
All You Want – Dido
I loved Dido’s debut album and especially that awesome single ‘Here with Me’. To say that song gripped me would be an understatement.
This album track I likely would have missed if again I didn’t buy the album and listened to it in its entirety many times. This one for me is the resonating guitars.
Start it at 01:53, Candy starts at 02:03
All over the World – Pixies
Most of the Pixies material is great but here’s an example of a song which I don’t feel is particularly outstanding from their ‘Bossanova’ album. The part that caught my ear was that rather long grungy guitar outro with the megaphone overtones.
I could very easily have missed this as it seems a little disconnected from the first 3 minutes of the song.
Start it at 02:53, Candy starts at 03:03
A Simple Mistake – Anathema
Possibly the greatest song from this Liverpool band you have likely never heard of. This is a song of two halves and while I love all of it due to its ambient resemblance to Pink Floyd at times, the second half gets a little heaver while keeping the same theme going.
If you like what you hear listen to all of it, a truly wonderful song.
Start it at 04:13, Candy starts at 05:01
Chelsea Monday – Marillion
Soaring guitars are what this is about; if that’s your thing you really should check this out. The outro solo is simply wonderful and will have you getting that Air Guitar out for sure.
This song is from their debut album ‘Script from a Jester’s Tear’. I just wish Fish would stop talking over the end part of the solo.
Start it at 05:08, Candy starts at 05:18
Goodbye to Love – The Carpenters
It may seem a little odd to feature The Carpenters in such an article, but have you heard that guitar outro in this song? Wonderful distorted guitar that livens this already lovely song up no end. As well as loving all this Metal music, I love this band to bits. The harmonies and arrangement were second to none.
Start it at 02:37, Candy starts at 02:47
Time Flies – Porcupine Tree
I had include a piece from my favourite band. There is an edited ‘proper’ video of this song but the best part has been cut out, just scandalous! So I present you with the full and best version.
I honestly rate this up there with the ‘Comfortably Numb’ solo, and I am a big Pink Floyd fan too.
I’m quite sure Steven Wilson wrote this as a tribute to one of his favourite bands as I can hear both ‘Dogs’ and ‘Time’ in this song.
Start it at 06:00, Candy starts at 06:28
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Is this the best outro or solo ever? Well possibly and if you check the web you will find many think so. I for one have heard it a little too much for my liking but I will include it as it still does something for me even after 1000 listens.
If you have never heard it before, then where have you been all you life?
Start it at 04:21, Candy starts at 04:31
That’s enough for now. If you can submit any of these resonating guitar or solo songs that really make your hair stand on end, I would love to hear them.
If you found this article so invigorating that you are now a positively googly-eyed, drooling lunatic with dripping saliva or even if you liked it just a bit, then please upvote, comment, resteem, engage me or all of these things.

I heard a joke some time ago which pretty much describes this very thing:
A kid comes into class a few minutes late.
Teacher: "What could possibly be so important that you are late for my class?"
Student: "Bohemian Rhapsody was playing on the radio and you just can't walk away from a jam like that."
Teacher: "Fair enough."

While looking for an appropriate response I discovered this. The actor doesn't look too much like Freddie though.

Nice find. I wasn't aware that was coming out either. Looks like it might be alright.

I always get a kick out of the fact that every God-fearing, queer-bashing redneck football fan knows every word to at least two Freddie Mercury songs.
Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Those are some nice choices, took me some time to listen to them all (I wanted to hear the whole songs). There is just one I knew, from Dido, as I own and like her albums.
Also, I think I've heard the name of the Anathema band before, but never listened to it, and boy, that song has indeed that Pink Floyd sound, I like it a lot. Seems like I'll be listening to this band a lot more in the incoming days.
And I thought about some of these songs that have a "Aha!" moment, and one comes to mind immediately: Madness from Muse: sounds like an intro for 3:40 before the voice of Mathew really comes in powerfully.

Anathema are a bit hit and miss, and vary enormously depending on which part of their career you are listening too. The song I posted is up there with their best. I missed going to see them last year because my car acted up on the day of the gig. I wasn't happy.
I loved old Muse, but haven't listened to their new material, including this song. I caught some live footage recently on TV and some songs stood out. I know there is some of the newer songs that I will like.

I always loved the distorted guitar on that song, it is a little out of character for them.

To hell with the candy, I want it all! Marks out of 10:
The Pretenders - 7, but with definite high spots.
Fleetwood Mac - 10 with Peter Green, 7 to 10 thereafter depending on the album. Tango is a 10.
Genesis - 6, Phil Collins 7, Peter Gabriel 10.
Dido - new - 4, but they may grow on me.
Pixies - new - 4, but they may grow on me.
Anathema - new - 9, but you say they are patchy.
Marillion - 10 with Fish, 8 with Steve Hogarth.
The Carpenters - I don't usually listen to them which makes them a 7, but they are worth more, I'm sure.
Porcupine Tree - new - 4, but they may grow on me. They grew on me. At least an 8.
Pink Floyd - 10, no qualifiers.
Trust me, I'm a doctor.

I like the Peter Green stuff too, too bad he went a became a monk or something.
I always compare Anathema with Porcupine Tree and they just cant compete for quality.. Steven Wilson is simply a genius and whats more CURRENT..
if you love PF, then listen to the PT back catalogue.. barely anybody has heard of them and its really unjustified. Wilson's solo stuff is great, escpecially 'The Raven that Refused to Sing'.

This is a nice little playlist that will introduce me to some new sounds. I always wanted a fringe like Chrissie Hynde, but was never allowed because "it would be in your eyes."

Her hair was 'in your eyes' wasn't it? Hope you like the tunes, or rather the candy which may make them a little more accessible.

Yes, I think it's a really good idea, thank you. I don't think I have ever knowingly heard anything by the Pixies, although people always tell me they are great. I know Tango in the Night - and I know what you mean about the candy! Looking forward to the rest.

You picked some great songs! I am having a hard time thinking of any myself right now, but my mind is still fuzzy from the weekend. A couple of them I have never heard, so I might have to go check them out!

Some cracking choices there. I knew some of them and you get bonus points for the Genesis. Duke is such a great album. I'll have to do my own post
