At the age of 18 i went to the university . I didn’t know exactly what to do so i thought that maybe i should do what i was interested in . On my mind there was 2 options . The first one was philosophy , i had a lot of questions about life in general . The second one was music . Because i didn’t know which job i wanted to do i chose to study music at the university . I have to admit that i was feeling inferior , nobody talks about it but the truth is that there is a sociology of music . Most of the time people who listens to classical music have been educated since their childhood . When you arrive in musicology the persons who study with you make classical music since they are young . Most of them started music schools when they were 6 years old and know how to read scores , how to harmonize , they know who are Bach , Chopin , Liszt or Fauré . I arrived at the university without thoses knowledges . To be frank i started listening to music at the age of 15 . Before that it never interested me . I’ve discovered that there was so much intolerance between conservatory music schools and universities . Each one had a different point of view about music . At this time i also started to study classical music with a wonderful teacher who has been fired because he was not putting pressure on his pupils when they didn’t work . Sometimes i was too lazy to play guitar , we were taking a drink in the closest bar to discuss about music . So at this moment i was in a classical music school , at the university and i had 2 others funk , blues , rock etc… guitar teachers . I was also open minded and played guitar with flamenco dancers , but also tango with an 80 years old guy who was playing bandoneon awfully ( his fingers were hurting ) or contemporary music with a guy who stopped trumpet when he realised he would never play as fast as Tommy Iommi ( don’t ask me where is the logic , i don’t know ) . At the university i studied a lot of styles , classical , baroque music , contemporary music , etc… .
That leads us to what i would call the circle of intolerance . As i said before , i really love all kind of styles , i can listen to John cage as i can listen to Sia or Deep purple .
After thousand of conversations with musicians i realised that everybody was laughing at somebody with the same feeling that their music was better than the other one .
Of course everybody does not follow these rule but the truth is that it is general rule that you will find a lot in the music conversations .
If you love Britney Spears , the rockers , the funk guys , or other “ more serious styles “ will laugh at you .
If you love thoses “ serious styles “ , the jazz addicts will tell you that it is shit and that what really “ rocks “ is their music !
If you love jazz music , the classical addicts will tell you that it is really trivial compared to Bach , Stravinski or Verdi .
If you love classical music , the contemporary team will laugh at you … “ What ? you are listening to tonal Music ? Are you serious ? “
If you love contemporary music you will discuss about Pierre Boulez with a random guy who will laugh at you just like he would have said “ i can do better “ about Picasso’s paintings .
We’ve got our intolerance circle .
Any thoughts about it ?
And what did you finally become, after these studies ? Did you become a guitar player ?
