1973 when rock was outrageous. For x-daysofmusic

in music •  6 years ago

The #x-daysofmusic was kicked off by @backinblackdevil and I was nominated by @uwelang. Feel free to join in.

Around this time I was just starting school. I would have probably been in short trousers. My first school was in a Bedfordshire village called Cotton End. I would pass some fields of farm animals on my way to school. I remember exploring the area with my friends. I think kids had mmore freedom back then. It wasn't necessarily safer, but people were less stressed out.

Queen - Keep Yourself Alive

This was their first single. They always had a distinctive sound. Freddie had a great voice of course, but Brian's guitar was a new voice too. I wasn't to get into Queen for a few years via their Greatest Hits album. Later I would see them live, twice.

David Bowie - Life on Mars

This opens with a shot of his that shows his uneven pupils and then you see his whole outfit. Bowie always managed to look cool when others looked ridiculous. This may be my favourite song by him. I've played the guitar solo many times with a friend. I saw him live several times too. I just wasn't appreciating him at this time.

Sweet - Ballroom Blitz

This is music that I was hearing a lot in 1973. Glam was huge and these bands would often be on the TV. They weren't as cool as Bowie, but this was fun music that kids could love. Listening to it now I can appreciate that they had some great vocals. You may be surprised that I saw them live too, but that must have been around 1986 when I was at Coventry Polytechnic. We had Gary Glitter another time, but his name is dirt now for his crimes. Sweet singer Brian Connolly died in 1997, but some version of the band is still around. Yet another band to clock up 50 years.

I nominate @revisesociology to join this challenge.

The rules are to be interpretted as you like really, but are something like this:

  • Pick years from when you were born to now. It really doesn't have to be all of them
  • Feature some songs from one of those years in a post with some details about why you like them. You can write something about the year in general too.
  • Nominate another Steemian
  • Use the hashtag #x-daysofmusic

It's all just for fun, so rock on!

I'm Steve, the geeky guitarist.

Threesome Were Awesome!! But The Lyrics From David Bowie's Was Something Esoteric as Extraordinaire!!
All Very Reminiscing of Good Music Of The 70s. All Great Efforts @steevc

That is some great classical tunage! Many of the folks in the pub are into the classic stuff so I am starting to develop quite an appreciation for it. I have to see that Queen movie too.

Thanks for the tunes!

I remember my dad complaining that it was all, "just a load of noise," but great music does cross the generations and last for decades
Glad you enjoy it; especially the 'Glam Rock,' I hope

1973, the year I joined planet Earth!

Another fine selection of music by young men with long hair!

Nice choices. My friend has been on a big Queen kick lately because of the movie that just came out. This song has been going through my head for quite some time now because of him. I also really dig the Bowie song you picked. It is actually one of my favorites. I wasn't super familiar with it until a couple of years ago. It was on a show and I started digging into it. Thanks for sharing these!

I've not seen the movie yet, but I probably should. I love Queen

My friend has seen it a couple of times already. I have not. I will probably just wait until I can stream it.

Hope I type this properly as I'm trying tyo do it in time with 'Ballroom Blitz.'
This is my era, and I'm envious of you for having such iconic tunes to chose from
My brother was a big Queen fan, and I thought the album 'Queen' was pretty good
In fact I've just been down stairs to check, and I've still got an original vinyl copy.
We all became fans of course when Bo Rap hit the airwaves

There was a lot of great music around there, but the charts also had a lot of novelty crap that may have been forgotten.
