A Shirt on Sunday: The Flaming Lips - Hammersmith Apollo - 13th November 2006

in music •  5 years ago

This is another #ShirtOnSunday post inspired by @hockney who has already done lots of them. Here is hit latest.

I have been to lots of gigs, but do not always buy a shirt. One where I did was when I saw the wonderful Flaming Lips on their At War with the Mystics tour. I got into them when I saw them doing songs from The Soft Bulletin on Later. They have been around for a long time.

Ticket
The ticket is in one of our many click frames up the stairs.

I went with my other half who comes along to a lot of gigs with me without really hearing much of the band. I think she knew some of their songs from the radio. At the time I was having some training at work and a guy had come over from Israel to do that. We were chatting and it turned out he had a ticket for the same gig.

Front
The shirt is a bit of cheat as it is from a previous tour. I just happened to like it when I saw what was on offer. I am not even sure if the writing at the top is anything real.

Back
The back does contain a small obscenity.

The support was Midlake. They were good, but all I have by them is the one track CD that someone was handing out as we waited to get in.

The Lips always put on a show. Their crew were wearing superhero outfits and there was a crowd of people on stage. As they started the confetti cannons went off and big balloons were released. This video is from that tour and looks familiar with the mic-mounted camera and Wayne's puppet friend.

I seem to remember some political rants too. I think they must have been about George W. Bush who was idiot in chief at the time.

I have not been to any of their gigs since, but I would consider it. I've seen them do even more spectacular stuff at recent festival gigs in TV.

Why not join in with #ShirtOnSunday. You can do whatever you want with it really.

Rock on!

Oh, I love this band. I have them, I think it was in 2004, heard on the sampler "The Late Great Daniel Johnston" for the first time.

They are definitely original and they put on a fun show. I hope to see them again sometime

Flaming Lips do do good t-shirts. I've never been able to get excited about their music, though, which is a bother because I like the ideas they have.
Maybe I should go to a gig one day.

Music is such a personal thing. There are bands who have concepts I like, but their music doesn't do it for me.

Did you see there's a London Steem meetup today? I'm heading there after work.
