Alternative Weekend: Keeping it prog

in music •  6 years ago

As a follow-on to the MetalWeekend theme by @detlev we now have #AlternativeWeekend suggested by @slobberchops. He's been discussing this with me. I think it can be taken as a fairly broad term, but he's suggesting progressive and alternative music. Take that as you will and come up with three songs to share.

King Crimson - Starless

I missed this band at their prime, but one of the first CDs I bought was The Compact King Crimson. It didn't feature this song, but it gave me a good taste. I just find this beautiful. It's almost classical in feel. You don't see many bands with three drummers. I've still yet to see them live.

Genesis - The Musical Box

I'd heard their hits on the radio, but this early stuff with Peter Gabriel is quintessential English prog to me. It's amazing that this is nearly 50 years old now! I didn't see Genesis live until they played Knebworth with Phil singing in 1992. I've also seen Peter Gabriel live much more recently when he toured with an orchestra.

Page and Plant - Ramble On

Of course this is a Led Zep song, but I found this version and it was in this form that I experienced it live for their second album back together. This is 20 years ago when Page still had dark hair. He's one of my top guitar idols. Led Zep were much than just a rock band. They could swing between blues, folk, heavy rock and more prog-ish songs like this. It mentions Lord of the Rings for Tolkein's sake!

I hope you enjoy these songs. As the man says, play it loud!

I'm Steve, the geeky guitarist.

Wow that brings back memories. I once saw Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers and the Firm.

.
Back then when I lived in Texas I would go to concerts weekly in the Dallas area. It was a hot spot for the best of the best to play. I have seen most of the best bands from the 60s,70s, 80s live. WOW memories.

I never saw The Firm. I expect that was a good show

I have seen them live a few times even got to party with them once.

Now I'm really jealous

Wow, Steve, you saw Page and Plant together!

I've seen Page with the Foo Fighters, and Plant by himself, and it was my dream to attend that Led Zep reunion gig at the O2 Arena, but I did not win the right to buy tickets in the ballot.

Plant has no interest in Led Zep anymore, from what I gather, so it's likely never gonna happen for me.

I'm glad it happened for you. :)

It was the nearest I've got to seeing Zeppelin and most of the set was from that era. Plant does different arrangements of some of those songs now, but I can understand he doesn't want to just dwell on the past. Some bands become tributes to themselves. Music should keep moving on

Yeah, I get it. I chatted with a friend of his, who told me how little Plant feels he needs to go back there, and how much he enjoys moving on, growing, exploring.

I have seen him do some of these different types of arrangement live, such as his country-folk arrangements, when he was touring with Alison Kraus, and the World music type spin he went for at the Roundhouse iTunes music festival, back when they still did those there.

He is such an amazing artist. I love him so much. His new stuff, his old stuff. All of it. To hear Robert Plant rock out live is to feel alive.

But I'll never see Plant and Page together. Gotta be ok with that. :)

Great picks. I need to dig into some of the older Genesis stuff. I am mostly only familiar with the Phil Collins songs. I do like Peter Gabriel though, so I am sure I will like what I hear.

They were more about telling stories in the early days. I like a lot of Gabriel's solo work

Cool, like I said, I will check it out!

Ooooo. Ramble on. Now that's one I can get behind @steevc. 😁

.....and loud it got played with my (nearly) two year old boy. He stood in silence through the whole of the King Crimson song.

I keep trying to listen to Starless, its starts off great and then goes off somewhere for 4-5 minutes before returning to the original theme.I know.. that prog for you.. but its the 4-5 mins that doesnt really do it for me. At least part of it I like...

The Musical Box... what a masterpiece... I have listened countless times to this piece of music that simply takes you back in time to somewhere else... the closest I have heard to this in modern times is Stephen Wilsons', The Watchmaker.

I hadn't compared Watchmaker to Genesis. There may be some common ground.

Wow, the King Crimson song is awesome...

Many thanks for this. Love Jimmy Page. The Legend.
This song made my weekend . Iron Maiden - The Clairvoyant

so cool music, i like it..

You have a good taste for music, many classics that everyone should listen to ...
