What would our world today look like if it wasnt for him. It was him who reinvented the art of performing , and him who was constantly seeking for new challenges. If i were to describe his character by simply using one word , it would of course be diversity. Shame on you who have never heard of him. Infamous Glenn Gould who became the most talked about figure in classical music overnight after his debut concert in 1955 Washington DC. Gould, already famous in his native land for brilliance, originality and what some considered eccentricity, did not disappoint in Washington. Instead of the usual debut fare (some flashy Liszt or Rachmaninoff, perhaps, with one of the more popular Beethoven sonatas thrown in for gravitas), Gould opened his program with music by the obscure English renaissance composer Orlando Gibbons, then moved on to the even more obscure Dutch Renaissance composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. True, he played a sonata by Beethoven (Op. 109) but also one by the Austrian modernist Alban Berg, as well as Anton Webern's eternally elusive "Variations" and a handful of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Gould’s first Columbia recording in June 1955 was a sensation, the birth of a legend, while his second studio recording effectively brought his career full circle in April 1981. In 2000 almost twenty years after his death his 1981 recording exceeded 2 million of sales. Millennials should be exposed to his work , as it is his character and relevance who made classical music again. He was very much ahead of his time when he quit his concert life in "64 to work in a small studio in Toronto. He always wanted to produce podcasts and collaborate with various artists.
