It's a hot and humid night. You can't sleep. You can barely even breathe with the air so thick and heavy. That bottle of cheap whiskey you bought is now nothing more than just another ashtray. The window in your small, unkempt bedroom is open but in place of fresh air all that is coming through is the sound of music and voices from the bar down the street, and the intermittent flash of red neon. You look at the phone on your nightstand and for a brief moment you think of calling her. You know she wouldn't answer, but even if she did, what would you say? What could you say? Instead you wipe the sweat from your brow with the palm of your hand, you close your eyes and for just one tiny fraction of a second you wonder what it is you have done to deserve being thrown down into the depths of hell. You look at your pack of smokes, only five left and this night has no end in sight. You take one out and light it up...
That is how I would describe the sound of Miles Davis' 1959 album, Kind of Blue. Have a listen and tell me if I'm wrong.
There is no possible way I could ever do justice to this seminal work of that smooth, cool jazz sound, so instead I'm just going to implore you to read through the Wikipedia page. Kind of Blue is one of the greatest achievements of the human race, and I'm only being slightly hyperbolic when saying that. I mean, how can this not be one of the greatest albums of all time when you've got people like Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, and, of course, Miles Davis, all playing together?
1959 really was The Year that Changed Jazz, and this album is the one that does it for me. If you have an hour to spare after listening to this album you should click the link and watch that documentary, it's a great look at four fantastic albums that arguably changed the face of music forever.
Alright, I've been blathering long enough by now, here's a video of Miles and the gang playing So What. It's not great quality but it doesn't have to be a great quality recording to be an amazing quality performance.
Right, that's enough, see you tomorrow when I share another album I enjoy. If you like this post don't forget to upvote and leave a comment, just so I know I'm not wasting my time with these daily album posts.
Kind of Blue is great although for me Birth of the Cool is #1

I still haven't taken the time to listen to that. I'll give a listen during the week.

Thank you. I really love music and try to seek out as much of it as I can, it's both a blessing and a curse, haha. Putting my iPod on shuffle can be a real trip, going from something like Death Grips to Wagner in a single song.
If you'd like to pick a genre for tomorrow's album let me know, I'll see what I can come up with.

Same problem here. Shuffling between Tom Waits, Herp Alpert and Andreas Vollenweider has me in an emotional tizzy. Would love to hear some new electronica if you have any suggestions.

[Sorry about the length of this reply, skip to the bottom to listen to a few tracks while you're reading it, haha]
I've been meaning to get into Tom Waits for a long time now but I just haven't found that one song that makes me want to dig deeper. I enjoy listening to his music when somebody puts it on but I've not yet gone out of my way to listen to it.
When you say "new electronica" what do you mean? I sort of use electronica as a catchall term for a multitude of disparate genres. I'd almost include everything from Aphex Twin to Zach Hill under the term electronica, well, sort of. Also, do you want "new" meaning current, or "new" meaning something you haven't heard before? I'm not very well versed in current electronic music, I think the newest album/artist I've listened to is that Machine Girl one from yesterday and that's already three years old, haha.
Give me a few electronica artists or songs that you enjoy and I'll try and find some stuff in the same area that you might not have heard before. Sorry about trying to get specific but I enjoy sharing music with people and I think it helps to get a flavour of what they're into, haha.
In the meantime, here's a few tracks you could check out:
XXYYXX - Good Enough - Super chill with a great sample of No Scrubs.
Venetian Snares - Welfare Wednesday - Decidedly less chill than the last one. I'm probably going to do a MftU post about this guy at some point, if not I'll definitely do a post on that album.
Sleep Party People - I'm Not Human at All - I don't know if you'd count this as electronica, I think it's a bit more on the post-rock side of things.
Hardfloor - Acperience 1 - This is a more classic 90's acid tune, if you're into that sort of vibe. I came across this one recently while watching an anime on Netflix.
Saltillo - A Hair on the Head of John the Baptist - I was almost going to make this today's album but Kind of Blue was a better fit for last night, haha. I'm pretty sure I read once that the chap behind this music plays all the instruments himself for the samples. Also, any song that can include snippets of Shakespeare and have them sound good is alright by me.
I could go on but this reply is already long enough to be a post of it's own, haha.

Sorry for the late reply for what is a great response. I understand you that Electronica can mean different things to different people. The stuff you have suggested here is great. I particularly like Saltillo and must check out more of their stuff. Here are a few example of the stuff I like in the Genre. Bent, lemon Jelly, Ryskopp stuff like that. Thanks for your posts. Hope more people see the value in them.

Yeah, Saltillo is fantastic, the artist behind the project, Menton Matthews III, is very talented as both a musician and a painter.
I've heard a few Royskopp songs that I enjoy, the other two I'll have to look up when I get home.
And thanks, I'm happy at least one person is enjoying what I do, haha.
