Favorite Prince Album?

I was just listening back to Prince's Sign O' the Times, and how freaky and ahead of the curve the album is hit me so hard that it elevated my view of the album in Prince's overall discography--it's always been such a massive, knotty album for me. However, now that I'm older and have a bit more nostalgia for the music I heard in my youth, I've come to appreciate just how predictive the album was of a lot of darker, moodier sounds of the 90s.

I mean, how cutting edge was a song like "Hot Thing" for 1987?

It got me wondering about everyone's favorite Prince album and why? Is it a more obvious pick like Purple Rain or 1999? Or is it one of his more underappreciated works?

Oh man, I've actually been listening to a lot of Prince lately. It's been really great having him available on streaming this past year, since it was REALLY hard for internet-inclined millenials such as myself to find his music before without actually going to a music store. Do those even exist anymore?

My favourite record of Prince's is his 1979 self-titled album. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" is a jam for the ages, not to mention "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and the absolute banger that is "Bambi".

I really like Sign O' the Times as well. While much of his other work sounds at least a little dated by now (the retrowave 80s-revival notwithstanding), the songs on that record could have come out any time between '87 and last year. Of course, every one of his albums has merit on its own. I'm just a little thrown off that it took until he died for his music to become so easily and widely accessible.

His best is missing from your image at the bottom there, the Batman soundtrack

Whos that?
Vicki Vale
Vicki Vale

lol, that soundtrack is a serious trip. the fact that he's writing from different points of view on that record is out there as hell.

I'll always remember Prince for his contribution to Batman,

Which also gave us such memes as Bernanke Saves Wall Street

that is a dank economic meme.

Prince is one of those artists who's catalog of work makes it difficult to have a favorite. If I had to choose it'd be a toss up between the self-titled album and Dirty Mind. But that answer could be completely different tomorrow.

I will say upon rewatching the Batman movie last year I was disappointed with how little of Prince's music you hear in the film.

Also do the Madhouse albums count? Because if that's the case I might have to change my answer...

i say you can count them if you'd like.

I freakin love prince! He made great music till he past. I listened to song on loop last year. It has a very strong hard rock vibe and an awesome solo at the end. Prince, George Micheal and David Bowie's later works were not as appreciated but I always looked forward to them.

Obviously "Sign O'times" is a classic but "Musicology" is what got me into Prince.
